On this day in 1994, Wes Craven unleashed a brand new Freddy Krueger on horror audiences around the world in the form of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. The film was a groundbreaking horror sequel that toyed with audience’s expectations. While mostly well reviewed, the film ended its run at the box office with a disappointing take that didn’t leave New Line Cinema begging for more.

I will never forget the first time I watched Wes Cravenâ€s New Nightmare. I begged my parents to take me to the theater to see it but that, sadly, was a no-go. It wasnâ€t playing within an hour of where I lived and by the time my local theater received it, it was in and out in a week. The reviews I read (at the age of ten, I was a subscriber to Entertainment Weekly…whether that is awesome or sad can be left up to your own judgment) were very mixed. The critics that loved it (The New York Times, Roger Ebert, USA Today) hailed the filmâ€s praises but the critics that hated it (Entertainment Weekly being one of them) called the film a pretentious mess. I had no idea what to expect going in but I know for certain I didnâ€t expect it to be the one movie that would change my life for the better part of two decades.

Wes Cravenâ€s New Nightmare tells the story of what happens when the evil that is created in any work of art (in this case, the Elm Street films) is released into mass media. It is the first mainstream horror movie to truly ask the question as to what effect the art being made has on the audience that views it. It is a powerful question and it has been the surface of debate ever since the medium of film was created. What New Nightmare does so spectacularly is it takes it to the next “meta” level of having the actors and filmmakers of the original Nightmare in on the phenomenon. What should come across as convoluted is strangely thought provoking.

But..let us start back at the beginning. Wes Cravenâ€s New Nightmare begins with a scene that is a direct homage to the original Nightmare on Elm Street with “Freddy” working on building a new glove. Little do we know that this is just a tease as we are actually watching the behind-the-scenes work on a brand new Nightmare film complete with Wes Craven and the very beautiful Heather Langenkamp. An effect goes wrong, the Freddy glove comes to life, and two special effects guys are brutally murdered. The film takes another turn by revealing this to be only a dream of Langenkamp, a foreboding warning of what is yet to come. We meet Heather in her everyday life. She appears to be happily married to a special effects guy named Chase, and has a young boy named Dylan. But her life is about to change as a series of harassing phone calls threaten her sanity. When her husband dies in a car accident and her son starts exhibiting some “Freddy like” behavior, her world is turned upside down and she is forced to confront the question of whether or not Freddy has entered into her “real life.” The only way to stop this “new Freddy” is to appear in another Elm Street film effectively putting the Genie (Freddy) back in the bottle (The film series).

To me, New Nightmare is that rare horror film in which everything works. The performances are pitch perfect, lead by a tour-de-force performance by the amazing Langenkamp (she has never been better than she is here). The script is full of twists and turns and the movie is quite possibly the best looking of the entire series. What starts out as a maze of mirrors becomes something much more than your typical nightmare. As I said before, the film brilliantly examines the role film plays on those who watch it. Something that Wes Cravenâ€s Scream would play out to great effect two years later and something that I myself toyed with in writing Popularity Killer. I really canâ€t say enough about this film and homages to the original are expertly placed. I think about this film on a nearly daily basis and I hope one day to create a work on art that has the same merits of this film. It really is something special.

After moving back to her mother Ericaâ€s hometown, Maggie is struggling with the fact that her mother is now never home due to her new job as a waitress at a casino. Though, it isnâ€t long before she becomes friends with a group of kids consisting of Andy, Haley, Chaz, and Darrell, ultimately developing a relationship with Andy. When the local drinking spot gets busted, they are invited by lonely local vet assistant Sue Ann (after she just recently bought the alcohol) to party her place. But eventually once Sue Ann aka Ma begins to get a bit too possessive and creepy, the friends begin to want to stay away. But as secrets from the past are revealed, Maâ€s behavior goes from creepy to insane.

For starters, any spoilers you have seen in the trailer are pretty misleading, so rest assured there. The film was a lot more of a slow-burn than I was expecting, but despite this, itâ€s still a hell of a lot of fun. The pace the film chooses works as a representation of Maâ€s sanity. When we first meet Ma she seems like a friendly enough woman, but as the film progresses her crazy levels grows, so by the time we reach the intense ending, Sue Ann has full-on lost it. The thing is, Ma isnâ€t your typical villain, thereâ€s a more emotional core to her that becomes more revealed the more her background is shown and you genuinely feel sorry for her, while at the same time becoming freaked out by her and seeing her get what she deserves. This may make the viewer unsure how to feel, but itâ€s an interesting take on a villain.

Even more rare is that the teens in Maâ€s crosshairs are actually pretty damn tolerable, likable, and feel very realistic. We are also treated to the lead teen Maggieâ€s mother Erica getting a lot more to do than being the basic mother character, other than one questionable moment, we also have a great and realistic mother/daughter relationship between them that isnâ€t just a dramatic screaming match between them. Itâ€s really the other adult characters that arenâ€t given that much to do, especially Luke Evans†character who actually has a pretty integral part to the story and is Andyâ€s father (we donâ€t even see the father and son together in any scenes). The biggest issues I have involve subplot involving what Ma is hiding upstairs that makes her forbid the kids from going up there. Itâ€s not all out terrible or stupid, but it didnâ€t exactly feel necessary to the plot, and by removing it, we could have spent more time with the characters that werenâ€t fleshed out as much. The other issue is that it didnâ€t exactly utilize its R-rating apart from some nudity and language. Any violence we have could have easily been passed for a PG-13.

Those are really all the issues I had, but it didnâ€t make me enjoy the film any less, because the fact is, this is an extremely fun horror movie that has a great build-up, but also rides on the excellent performance by Octavia Spencer as Ma, who is not only having a blast with the part, but does such an amazing job showing the different layers and emotions to her character. The young cast in addition to Juliette Lewis as Erica also do a great job. For the stalker subgenre, this feels like a breath of fresh air. Itâ€s not a full-on thriller on the levels of Fear or Fatal Attraction, not full-on campy like Obsessed or The Boy Next Door, itâ€s perfectly nested between the two and just a hell of a lot of fun.

Charlotte is a woman who was once a child prodigy as a talented cellist. But when her mother fell ill, she was forced to quit and care for her. Years later, after her motherâ€s passing, Charlotte returns the life she left behind to a party thrown by her old teacher. There, she finds that heâ€s found himself a new pupil named Lizzie. As Charlotte and Lizzieâ€s relationship grows, strange occurrences begin to happen.

This film a very tough one to talk about without giving too much away. Go in VERY blindly with this one in order to allow the surprises of the film to be more effective. This is how I went in, and Iâ€m so glad I did. There are so many different layers to this film that it keeps you guessing of what will happen next and where it is going to go. Some parts are pretty grotesque, some are shocking, and there is plenty of intensity throughout to keep it engaging, along with the constant twists and turns. By the end of the film, you do find yourself asking certain questions, but much of these are more or less things you can form your own conclusion on.

More than anything this is a film where the ride to the final crazy and satisfying conclusion is worth taking. The performances by our two leading ladies (Allison Williams as Charlotte and Logan Browning as Lizzie) are great and are just as layered as the film itself and they nail every aspect because they completely and psychologically with the story and the characters they are playing. As of right now, this is probably the best horror film of the year so far. Once, again, GO INTO THIS AS BLIND AS POSSIBLE!

A couple who is unable to conceive, come across a baby who has seemingly fallen from the sky. They raise the boy as their own and name him Brandon. As Brandon grows older, he starts to develop mysterious abilities, but as his abilities grow stronger, the live of his parents, and the people of Brightburn find their lives in danger.

Brightburn is an evil kid horror film that essentially comes in the form of a re-telling of Superman/Clark Kent if Clark grew up to be evil. This is the filmâ€s biggest strength. It tells a solid, entertaining, and original story for an evil kid film. Where it weakens though also lies in the script. The story is good, but the script is really rushed. We donâ€t much development or establishment of Brandon and his family, nor do we get much of Brandon and the people he encounters in town. We are only given bits and pieces. It would have been nice to see these relationships as well as the development of his abilities as the film progresses.

All of this said, the film still does entertain and gives us some nice gory scenes, and we also are given a pretty dark ending the feels like a punch in the gut in regards to a particular character, this all after a pretty intense final 20 minutes that slightly makes up for the lack of thrills we had prior. For a small budget, the effects actually look pretty well-done. In terms of acting, Elizabeth Banks turns in a fantastic performances as Brandonâ€s conflicted mother who feels torn between the love of her son and the obvious signs that something isnâ€t right with him. The rest of the cast does a fine job as well. Unfortunately, one of the most important elements of a creepy kid film is the performance of said creepy kid. Jackson A. Dunnâ€s performance as Brandon is extremely bland and lacking in the creep factor, this also doesnâ€t help the film in the creep factor either. Despite the rushed script and lack of thrills, the movie does set itself up for what could be a very promising series, one that I definitely would continue to watch for Brandonâ€s growing rise to evil.

A recently widowed social worker, Anna, is investigating a case where the mother of two young boys is exhibit disturbing behavior by locking them in a closet insisting sheâ€s protecting them from La Llorona. La Llorona is a legend of woman in white who drowned her kids in the river after her husband left her for someone else, and then killing herself. Now she seeks out new children to replace them, and if you hear her cries she targets you. Now Anna discovers her own children have been targeted and must do whatever she can to protect them.

The newest entry in the Conjuring universe ranks with the original Annabelle and The Nun as one of the weakest films in the franchise. We are given a very interesting story with a creepy legend and villain. Unfortunately there is very little substance to either of these things. While we do love seeing Anna fighting for her kids, as a horror movie, itâ€s very lame. The film and its villain are relegated to nothing but the same jump scares over and over, and La Llorona is relegated to nothing but lunging and screaming. This could have been so much better if it eased back on the jump scares and relied more on building suspense, intensity, and a creepy atmosphere. While The Nun was also a weak film, it at least built itself around trying to appear creepy and atmospheric. It also needed a lot more depth and emotional pull with the family that it barely scratched the surface with. Aside from the scares, we also are subjected to extremely cringeworthy humor from the spiritualist who helps the family. It also features one of the most frustrating and dumb character decisions Iâ€ve seen in a horror film in a while, and I donâ€t care that it was a child, especially when said child knew they werenâ€t supposed to do this act but they did it anyway. All this said, the filmâ€s biggest strength rides on Linda Cardellini as Anna. She seriously carries this movie on her back by emitting a good amount of emotion in her performance. She expresses the grief she feels of losing her husband, being a single mom, and now having to worry for her childrenâ€s lives and the fear of whatâ€s now haunting them.

Overall, this movie was a huge missed opportunity in how they chose to approach this film but making it nothing but a jump scare film. And itâ€s unfortunate because Linda Cardellini puts so much effort into the role that the writers and producers should have put into the script and film, especially with a good story at hand.

Louis, along with his wife Rachel, and two children Ellie and Gage, move to a house in the country where they discover they live near a pet cemetery. After the family cat is killed, Louis is told by their neighbor Jud to bury the cat in a hidden grave beyond the cemetery. The family soon discovers the horror that this grave can bring, and that sometimes dead is better.

The newest adaptation is Stephen Kingâ€s classic novel is a much more solid version than the 1989 version. While the first half does follow the same beats as the novel itself and the original film, it is the mid-point and the last half where it goes in a different direction. While the novel is still superior, I found that they changes and direction they took with this version was fantastic and gave new life to the story. It is because of these changes we are given much more intensity and more character development for the character of Rachel. When the mid-point twist occurs, it is so well-excecuted in how it psyches the viewer out of what is going to happen. Itâ€s unfortunate that the tragedy is shown in the trailer but itâ€s still pretty effective. The change of the tragedy from the novel works just as good as the source materialâ€s tragedy. Itâ€s still sad, but thereâ€s also more room given for the performance of the actor to offer more choking moments.

From there, the rest of the movie is balls to the wall crazy, and ends with a pretty terrifying final scene that the viewer is left having to imagine the horror that comes next. The intensity of the last half of the film makes up for the pretty dull first half. Despite the slower first half, it still seems like the family is a bit under-developed. The same is said for their neighbor Jud. It seems like heâ€s only present to present the graveyard, whereas he has a lot more presence in the novel. And itâ€s a shame because John Lithgow does a great job in the role with what we have of him. Along with Lithgow we are also treated to easily the best performance of the film by Amy Seimetz as Rachel. Seimetz brings in the emotional pull of the film and you really buy into the sadness and terror sheâ€s expressing. Jete Laurence does very well too in the role of Ellie, whom also has quite a bit of material to work with. Sadly, itâ€s Jason Clarke who is the weakest link. Heâ€s the lead but we donâ€t feel much attachment to him, and his overall performance often times feels wooden or trying too hard to show emotion or look crazy, but I guess heâ€s at least trying. The other con I could mention is that the cemetery scenes come off as a bit too hokey in how they play out the creepiness of it.

Overall, I didnâ€t love the film, but it is a much stronger adaptation of Kingâ€s novel, primarily because of the changes it made from the source material while still being faithful to the story its trying to tell.

The post The Cat Came Back: PET SEMATARY (2019) appeared first on Slasher Studios.

The film opens with a young girl attending a carnival with her parents, who clearly have tension with one another. The girl wonders off onto the beach where she discovers a fun house with a room of mirrors. It is there that she comes face to face with a girl who looks just like her. Years later, the girl, Addie, is grown up with a husband and two kids and are on vacation heading to her childhood vacation home. That night, four strangers appear outside their home and look exactly like them. The doppelgängers now seeks to torment and eventually the family who must fight back.

After the success of Get Out, Jordan Peele returns to the horror genre with this more straightforward horror film. While there is much to enjoy with his follow-up film, there was a lot of aspects that I really didnâ€t care for that pales it compared to get out. The best part of this film is that it offers us an excellent concept. On the surface we have the opposite/evil version of our protagonists who want to take and take over their lives. That itself is a pretty chilling idea. For those who want to dig deeper, there are different themes to unpack with it that also can add a sense of creepiness and real-life applications to the story, and thatâ€s fine, and clearly what Peele is wanting people to do. The surface story story offers a couple of intense and well-orchestrated scenes to bring tension to the film. The initial home invasion being one of them, and a cat mouse game with the daughter being the other. Like Get Out, we do root for the protagonist to come out alive and we love seeing them fight back. However, I feel like they donâ€t do nearly as much with the horror elements as much as they could and seeing this family being tormented. A lot of this is due to some of the biggest flaws of the film. One such flaw being that the pacing is very long and drawn on out. There are times where it seems like theyâ€re getting the ball rolling, but then it will halt with too much conversation and much of it feel repetitive. Towards the end I found myself waiting for it to finally be over, there never seemed to have a consistency in tone, which leads to my next issue with the film, and definitely the biggest.

Instead of keeping us consistently on edge, Peele has chosen to insert moments of humor that feel very out of place and unrealistic given their situation. The father and the children are making comedic comments that completely make it seem like theyâ€re not worried about the situation they are in. At least Addie is consistently the one on edge but also in full protective mode to save her family. Thereâ€s also a moment in a characterâ€s death scene where their Alexa type device named Ophelia is misunderstanding the characterâ€s demands (for example, they ask Ophelia to call the police, to which Ophelia replies, “Okay, now playing “Fuck the Police”). This is something you would expect from a Scary Movie entry, along with the other jokes the film has. Iâ€m all for comedy in a horror film, but only if itâ€s warranted, makes sense, and not over-used (I had the same issue with last yearâ€s Halloween). Get Out perfectly used its comedy sparsely and didnâ€t over-stay itâ€s welcome, and it also perfectly balanced it and the horror, everything felt consistent and well-paced. Some of the comedic elements also came in the form of the sounds the doppelgängers make that are laughable more than creepy.

Finally, at the very end of the movie we are given a terrible twist that is so pointless, makes no sense, and just brings up more questions and plot holes than there would be if we didnâ€t have it. We do still have some questions left by the end of the film anyway, but nothing too frustrating. This is even after we have received two huge scenes of exposition of showing why the doubles are doing what theyâ€re doing. What we donâ€t get (and what the most important aspect would be) are the “how” questions. Those are really the flaws I had with the film, which seems like a lot, but really itâ€s just the pacing, humor, and the final twist that I only had major issues with. Other than that I did enjoy everything else it had to offer. One other thing includes an excellent performance from Lupita Nyongâ€o as our lead playing dual roles, and itâ€s great watching these two sides of her. Now, people are saying she deserves an Oscar for this and she deserves to make horror history with it, but I think thatâ€s kind of a stretch. Sheâ€s definitely great in the roles though. In addition we also have a very creepy and stunning score, and itâ€s very well-filmed, two scenes in particular stand out involving the murder of a family that is super well-done and then the fight scene towards the end.

While I do prefer Get Out as a horror film and as a film in general over this, and despite the issues I have with this movie, I would still recommend the movie just for the concept alone, Lupitaâ€s great performance, and the intense moments we do have are great.

After finding a purse on the subway, a young woman tracks down the owner and returns it to her. Discovering that the woman is pretty lonely, and having lost her own mom, Frances develops a friendship with Greta. But she soon discovers that Greta is harboring a twisted secret, and she’s not ready to let go of Frances.

Greta serves as a watchable, but also average and forgettable stalker flick. The biggest strength of the film lies in the cast. Chloe Grace Moretz, whom I normally don’t find a very good actress is actually very serviceable here. She captures the naivety and sincerity of Frances well, and she pulls off her fear and dramatic scenes without doing technique of over-acting like she typically does. Isabelle Huppert as the titular character is fantastic and brings the great amount of creepiness to her role with how subtle she can be. She does have her outburst moments that work well too, but it’s the lighter moments that are the most effective. And then we have Maika Monroe as the voice of reason as Frances’ roommate and best friend Erica. Erica is easily the most likable character because of not only being the sensible one, but she’s also the fun and pretty reliable friend, and she definitely has her bad ass moments in this movie. Monroe nails the comedic elements, and when she gets into defensive mode when she has to face Greta and defend Frances, you are hardcore rooting for her. This is ironic because you find yourself rooting for Erica more than caring about Frances, but this isn’t entirely uncommon for horror/thriller films.

The movie does feature some fairly intense and creepy moments, one being a chase scene involving Erica, and then towards the end when you find yourself worrying about the well-being of a particular character. Other than that however, much of the movie you’re mentally shouting at some of the characters for the poor decisions they’re making. Along with that it also feels tonally confused. Initially it comes off a more “serious” thriller, but lacking a lot of the thrills. And then at some points it switches gears to become campy and goofy, one scene in particular involves a dance that Greta does. This comes off as more as more comedic than anything and not in a good way. When it comes to stalker films you have two options, make it creepy and thrilling like Cape Fear, Fatal Attraction or Fear, or go full-on camp like The Boy Next Door, Obsessed, or The Roommate. You really can’t do both without making it look ridiculous. In all honesty, this was a rather dull stalker film that’s only backed by strong performances and just a couple of intense scenes, and it’s very well-filmed. The most unforgivable thing about the movie is the fact that it basically includes a dog that only exists just to have the “harm the pet” cliche. Which is not okay. And the fact that the dog is adopted by Greta, whom Frances helps select, is next on the pound’s list to be put down. Animal deaths like this are cruel enough in film, but under circumstances like this is just mean-spirited and senseless. Okay, rant done. By the end of Greta, it leaves us with an unsatisfied and ambiguous ending that makes you groan. And on top of that we have Frances’ father who becomes a prominent figure as the story progresses, but then he’s literally forgotten about with no real closure between them.

Overall, I’d say Greta is worth watching if you are into films like it. It’s not particularly thrilling, nor is particularly fun, but it’s a decent enough time-killer if you happen to find it on Netflix or want to rent it for two bucks at Redbox. It at least has the saving grace of solid performances, so if you’re a fan of the cast then I do highly recommend it in that case.

After thinking she broke the time loop by defeating her killer, Tree discovers that time has come back again for her. Only this time sheâ€s in a different dimension where everything is different. Now she must save those around her, reveal the new killer, and decide whether she wants to return to her reality or not.

Contrary to what the trailer gives off, not everyone is fair game in this sequel, and thatâ€s one of the issues I had with the film. However, I did have a blast with this film and had just as much fun with it as I did the first film, but the first is still much better. To start with the pros, as mentioned, this movie is a ton of funny, and this is mostly due to the fact that the laughs are on full-blast this time and they really work. This is mostly thanks to Jessica Rotheâ€s brilliant comedic timing as Tree. When she wakes up back in her loop again, this whole sequence following her from Carterâ€s dorm to her sorority house is one laugh after another from Treeâ€s outbursts, to even just the facial expressions she has throughout the scene. Rachel Matthews once again also delivers some laughs as Treeâ€s snobby sorority sister Danielle, and sheâ€s given even more to do in this film. We are also treated to a comedic montage of Tree having to kill herself over and over. Another thing I enjoyed was that it wasnâ€t a total rehash of the first film. We do get some great fight/chase sequences with the Baby Face killer, but these and the horror itself takes the backseat for the comedy and sci-fi angle it chooses to take instead.

In some ways I think this is a wise decision so it wouldnâ€t be a total copy of the first film, so when the horror scenes do happen, they have a more welcoming effect. To circle back to Jessica Rothe, she hardcore establishes her versatility as an actress. She does such an amazing job of showing her comedic chops, her bad ass female side, and her dramatic/emotional side. Thatâ€s another thing this sequel has more of, it gives us a bit more dramatic depth by giving Tree a pretty emotional scene with a particular character. And she shares some sweet moments with Israel Broussard as Carter. The whodunit angle is still present, and you do guess of who it is, however, this is a decent segue into the cons. The reveal of the killer isnâ€t so much shocking as itâ€s more like, “huh, okay”, but then that just gets completely ruined when a 2nd killer is revealed and it makes absolutely no sense for them to be a part of it. Circling back to earlier, the script is a bit over the place and leaves questions. Why involve Ryanâ€s character in getting killed (as shown in the trailer) and later say that everyone is fair game to the killer, when in the end itâ€s really only Tree and one other character who become the killerâ€s targets? It would have been great if Tree actually had to save the lives of those around her by having to kill herself over and over (as hinted in the trailer), when in the actual movie, she really has no reason to be doing so. The other question that it left me with was why was it Tree who was caught in the loop? We received the explanation of HOW she got into it, but not the why. Why was Tree caught in it, and not someone like Carter? In my experience with films involving time travel and other dimensions, I do try not to question things too much because it just leads to frustration.

Happy Death Day 2U does have some plot holes issues and leaves you questioning about certain events and choices, but in the end, itâ€s a hell of a fun and serviceable sequel that really benefits from the brilliant performance by Jessica Rothe.

Following the birth of their son Miles, a married couple notices that Miles is developing at an astounding rate and heâ€s deemed gifted. But soon, they notice that along with his intelligence, Miles is also developing some dark and twisted behavior.

The film begins with an opening scene that reveals right away of whatâ€s up with Miles. So unless youâ€re pretty clueless, the audience knows long before the couple of why Miles is the way he is. This kind of jumps the shark, admittedly, but doesnâ€t make the concept any less interesting and fresh enough for the evil kid genre. It does often make it pretty creepy though in certain situations involving Miles and other characters, especially his mom. Despite the fresher concept, being an evil kid movie, it does have the typical tropes you would expect. Creepy stares, the killing of animals, creepy comments. However, each of these are still pretty damn effective. And the reason why a lot of this works is due to the performance of Jackson Robert Scott. This kid crushes the role of Miles and does an excellent job of switching between evil and innocent. The other scare factors involved though do not work and it doesnâ€t help that theyâ€re repetitive. We have many moments of the mom wandering around in the dark with the occasional jump scare involved.

And then we have the ending, I was fine with it enough, but it was essentially the same ending as another particular evil kid movie, which is the only issue I had with it. Some may not like the ending, but itâ€s nothing too out of the ordinary. The biggest flaws with the movie for me involve the roles of the parents. They are so dull and uninteresting, and I really didnâ€t care about them. The performances of Taylor Schilling and Peter Mooney as Miles†parents were…okay, but they were also very one-note, especially from Schilling who goes through the whole moving with a shocked, but bordering sour look on her face. However, I like that the husband/dad knew well enough to haul ass when shit started getting too crazy instead of being the super disbelieving father character.

The Prodigy isnâ€t a great horror movie, but if youâ€re into evil kid horror, youâ€ll definitely enjoy this one, especially due to the newer concept. But it does owe major credit to films like The Omen, Orphan, and My Soul to Take.

A group of strangers are invited to a building that houses an escape room in hopes of winning $10,000. What they think might be an ordinary escape room turns out to be all too real and all too deadly. 

Going into Escape Room, my expectations were pretty low, but by the time I left, I was pleasantly surprised. At first when the opening scene ended, I was a little apprehensive that it missed out on being R rated and bloodier. However, at the movie progressed, it wore its PG-13 rating really well and didnâ€t bring itself into territory where blood and gore wasnâ€t needed, this isnâ€t Saw or even Cube, despite having similarities to the latter. It may not reach the levels of those two films, but Escape Room manages to stand on its own two feet as its own thing. The film is actually a blast of a film with enough intensity that really drives the film. Each escape room is really well-designed as a set and the way the rooms work are pretty crazy. What adds to the fun is trying to figure out the clues along with the characters and hope that the characters you like make it out alive. As for the characters, I actually liked all of them except for two of the six. The cast themselves all did a fantastic job, especially Taylor Russell as (essentially the lead character) Zoey, Logan Miller as Ben, and Deborah Ann Woll as Amanda. Each of the six characters have their own backstory and are actually fleshed out better than I expected, and all of them are really well-established before they are killed. The reveal in the middle of the movie that reveals their connection felt legitimate and served the plot well, however, there were some elements involving the twist that felt a little farfetched.

There was one turn in the film that I really enjoyed even if I should have seen it coming, it felt like a nice surprise. It does bring emphasis on who the game maker is and that ultimately doesnâ€t really go anywhere or reveal anything that could have, so by the end of the movie I was expecting another shocker at the reveal of the game maker, but it didnâ€t reveal anything interesting. Speaking of the ending, we have an additional 7 minutes of movie left after what should have been where the movie ended. These extra 7 minutes felt extremely tacked on, stupid, cheesy, and unnecessary. 

Escape Room might not end up being remembered by the end of the year, or even end up being one of the best horror films of the year, but damn this was a blast of a movie and a fun one to start the new year.

1) A Quiet Place

This is a brilliant film as well as a horror film that brings a huge amount of terror and drama together in such a perfect way. The movie has very little dialogue and highly relies on the senses and the mind to bring on the heart-pounding terror. The scary and intense scenes are so well-done that they had me holding my breath. You genuinely care about this family and want to see them survive. Emily Blunt and John Kraskinski are brilliant in their roles as the parents who will do anything to protect their children and each other. 

2) Annihilation

Part sci-fi, part horror, part drama, this movie perfectly combines these elements and balances them out in a mind-bending, intense, and often emotional film. The visuals are amazing, the monsters are fantastic, the score is excellent, and the setting of the Shimmer is so well established and provides so much mystery of what it is and how it affects people. This is a very cerebral film that may not work for some, but truly is probably the most under-appreciated and almost forgotten horror film of the year. 

3) The Strangers: Prey At Night

This sequel is a huge tonal change from the original slow-burn thriller. This one is first and foremost a slasher. The titular villains are more vicious than ever and you are just itching for them to get whatâ€s coming to them. The film features many homages to classic horror films and even how its filmed has a great retro Carpenter-esque feel, and then you have the excellent soundtrack (the pool scene involving Total Eclipse of the Heart is one of the best horror scenes of the year). The cast does a fine job and you care for them, even if they could have used a little more development. By the end of the film I felt a huge rush of adrenaline released. Of all the horror films to come out this year, this one is easily the most fun and entertaining.

4) Suspiria

This remake pays an excellent tribute to the original film while telling itâ€s own story. This is definitely a slow-burn film that is sprinkled with haunting and twisted moments. In the big dance scene towards the end, itâ€s so intense and well-done, and the addition of how it intercuts during the chase scene of one character is great. This movie succeeds in keeping you wondering just what is going to happen next. The pay off in the final act as well as its twist is excellent. The epilogue scene however definitely could have been cut out, but it wasnâ€t exactly terrible either. Tilda Swinton is great playing three different characters, Mia Goth shines in a role that involves her character growing from a side character to one whoâ€s more in the forefront. Unfortunately Dakota Johnson just didnâ€t have much to do in her lead role, she did fine with what she had, her physical performance was great, but she deserved a character with more persona and depth. That said, I consider this to be one of the best and more successful remakes ever made. 

5) Hereditary 

I admit I didnâ€t love this movie nearly as much as others. I thought the pacing was too slow, and that it could have been shorter because some of it felt repetitive and dragging. But my biggest issue is that when the real in your face horror comes in in the final act, I was not sold by that at all. Sure some brutal and shocking stuff happens, but to me, it felt way too familiar and been done before. Everything in the final act felt too familiar and even done in the Paranormal Activity franchise. Now all of that is where my issues end. Everything prior to the final act was brilliant. Had this kept the same tone throughout the film instead of going balls to the wall horror, I would have loved it much more. The constant feeling of dread and intensity throughout the film and between the family was so tangible and perfect, and often felt like a punch in the gut. Toni Collette is just plain amazing and Oscar-worthy at the mother/wife of the family desperately trying to hold herself and her family together, and you see the anguish sheâ€s trying to hold in and the desperation of trying not to appear crazy to her family when shit gets real. If there is any horror performance in years that deserves award recognition it is definitely Toni who owns this movie.

6) Hell Fest

This is a plain, simple, and fun slasher that hits all the right notes. I personally really liked the characters and had fun with them, I didnâ€t want any of them to die. The setting was excellent and well-used and made for some great intense scenes and well-executed jump scares. The killer was pretty basic and not the most original, the kills could have been gorier, and the transition to the final act felt so clearly rushed they killed off two characters in the most boring way at the same time in a clear attempt to cut to the chase. More than anything, the final scene wasnâ€t necessary and felt pretty tacked on. Still, it was great to see a fun slasher like this in the theater this year along with Strangers Prey At Night.

7) Halloween

Jamie Lee Curtis is amazing in her return as Laurie in this reimagining of the series. She shows Laurieâ€s trauma very well makes you feel her pain, and sheâ€s great in her bad ass moments. Her traumatic scenes could have been fleshed out more (despite my disbelief of her being this traumatized after just those short few minutes with Michael in the original). Michael has never been more menacing or terrifying and I loved it. My biggest issue lies in the script. There were too many undeveloped characters and some that were only used as plot devices. We also have a plot twist the felt out of place, and ending that felt underwhelming due to its ambiguity. I was also not a fan of the humor in it, it ruined a kill scene that should have been intense and scary but was ruined by just one comedic line. This film had flaws, but it definitely was a good and serviceable film to fans by giving us a new version with great callbacks to the original series, and good cat and mouse sequence with Laurie and Michael in the final act.

8) The Ritual

This lost in the woods horror movie perfectly uses the woods setting and the fear of the unknown to deliver and intense and suspenseful movie. Itâ€s in the same vein of Blair Witch Project where less is more. When we get to the final act, we are given more physical horror, and that works well-enough. But itâ€s only when the movie shows our films†villain that it becomes a letdown. If we had only seen bits of the monster at the end, that would have been fine, but to show the whole things was disappointing. 

9) Mandy

This revenge horror films takes its sweet time during the first hour to introduce us to our characters, and it is very testing of patience during this hour. However, the gorgeous but haunting cinematography and visuals seem to keep you gripped until the main revenge plot of the film begins. From thereâ€s itâ€s a blood bath with a fantasically unhinged performance from Nicolas Cage. The whole films is a trippy and bloody fever dream you canâ€t look away from.

10) Bird Box

This film doesnâ€t have as much scares or intensity as A Quiet Place with its similar plot (instead sound this involves sight), and it definitely aims to be more of a drama with horror elements than an actual horror. That said, itâ€s still a good and occasionally intense movie with some crazy moments. Sandra Bullock is fantastic as the hard mother who is hell bent on saving her kids. What I admired about the movie is that we donâ€t get to see these monsters, instead we get the feel of what happens when they are around, and thatâ€s just as chilling. The film alternates between the past and present, but it manages to come off as if we are watching two separate stories, which I thought was a nice little tactic.

1) Slender Man

How is it possible to screw up a Slender Man movie? This movie shows itâ€s possible. Completely boring, no effort involved whatsoever, a script thatâ€s all over that place, no scares at all, un-engaging and boring and stupid characters, weak acting, cutting out all of the good and violent stuff from the trailer, plot holes galore, characters that are just left forgotten, cringeworthy teen drama. The only good thing I can say about this movie is that it did have some creepy imagery and Joey King delivered a decent enough performance. The Bye Bye Man is a better Slender Man movie than Slender Man.

2) Cynthia

This movie is pure garbage. The horror is terrible, the humor is terrible, the characters are terrible, the story is dumb as hell, and the creature is laughable and ridiculous. There was no point to this movie whatsoever. Most I can say about it is that Scout Taylor-Compton is at least sort of trying to work with the script and character.

3) Open House

Despite a solid performance from Dylan Minnette, this is another boring horror movie that goes nowhere and ultimately leaves us with nothing but a grim and tasteless ending that just doesnâ€t feel warranted. This is a terrible slow burn film where nothing happens during and no pay off at all in the end and we are left no answers to anything. Everything we just saw just feels pointless.

4) Inside

This watered down remake of the grim and brutal original French film feels like a dramatic Lifetime movie and even ends like a Lifetime movie. This film shows zero respect to the original. Rachel Nichols and Laura Harring however do a good job with their roles despite lacking the grit the actresses in the original had to express.

5) Winchester

This a boring and laughable haunted house film with cheap jump scares and a propaganda anti-gun film. It doesnâ€t do NEARLY as much as it could have with the ghosts and the setting of the house, as good as the production design is. This hardly even feels like a horror movie, itâ€s just a drama with more talking than there is anything scary or suspenseful. This is just a dull movie with an uninteresting story and even more uninteresting characters. Even Helen Mirren feels like this movie is a chore to do. 

6) Cloverfield Paradox

On a production standpoint, this movie isnâ€t bad and I admit I did like the final shot of the film. But the script is a huge and confusing mess where nothing makes any sense. It tires way too hard to be a new Event Horizon, and how it connects to the Cloverfield universe is terrible and way too forced and hokey. The trailer that premiered during the super bowl the night the film itself premiered looked like the film was going to be great with how it was edited together and would be things full circle. Instead we get an overstuffed mess.

7) Demon House

This could have had so much potential, and some elements of the film are creepy, but what this movie fails to do is make you believe that what youâ€re watching is real. How the movie was filmed just made everything look staged and fake. Maybe Iâ€m not just not enough of a believer, but in the end this movie didnâ€t offer anything for me.

8) Slice

While I give the movie credit to try be ambitious and retro, the story was just boring with too much going on, and it just wasnâ€t funny. The characters didnâ€t do anything for me and felt really bland. The cast was fine and seemed dedicated, but for a movie that was supposed to be a cheesy comedy horror, it was just boring. 

9) Ruin Me

Initially the movie had a solid concept and I enjoyed the first part of it, but once the mid-point twist came about it went downhill for me there. I was hoping for a fun slasher but it just became a different movie entirely that I didnâ€t want, and the final act twist was just the final nail in the coffin. 

10) Unfriended: Dark Web

To its credit, this sequel is much darker and the characters are more likable, but this is also a sequel that was boring, and despite the characters being likable, they were also really boring and stupid. They also didnâ€t do nearly as much with the dark web as they could have, and the stuff they did do without felt way too over the top and unbelievable. I felt more terror and realism from similar movies like The Den and Ratter. Itâ€s also worth mentioning that the ending I got was so stupid involving a countdown and a van. The other ending that was released in theaters sounded so much better.

Megan, an ex-cop dealing with a traumatic event that lead her to substance abuse, is granted a graveyard shift job at a morgue. She sees this as an opportunity to focus on herself and stay out of trouble. One night the brutalized body of a young woman is brought in. Megan then begins to experience horrific sightings and sounds. It turns out, the body of the woman is still possessed by a demon after a failed exorcism.

This movie was way better than I expected, and way better than it had any right to be. The opening scene of the movie took my surprise by just how intense and brutal it was. The opening alone made it better than any mainstream possession/exorcism film Iâ€ve seen in years. When we first meet Megan, sheâ€s established as a woman who is clearly troubled and feels the need to push people away at this point in her life. When we find out what happened, and how itâ€s affected her, it does a good job of tying that into the story and watching the character grow. What it does with Meganâ€s situation is that it nicely touches upon themes involving trauma, depression, and anxiety. Conveniently this also ties into the possession aspect of the story. Shay Mitchell does a great job of showing this struggle Megan is going through and we really root for her character, and thatâ€s also thanks to Shayâ€s performance. The supporting cast is also fleshed out well-enough to where you get to know them and like them, they have importance to Megan and have enough depth to make them more than just disposable characters. The kills in this movie are pretty brutal and we have some pretty grotesque visuals for the movie to definitely earn its R rating unlike The Conjuring films that always feel PG-13. The morgue setting is very well-used and the movie features plenty of intense scenes that have a good build up. Unfortunately the only jump scares we have are the ones you can sense a mile away. But the intense sees in the film make up for that.

Itâ€s also worth noting that the physical performance of the cadaver and the actress who plays her provide a huge helping hand in bring the intensity. There are plenty of “oh shit” moments involving Hannahâ€s body and all youâ€re thinking is “get the fuck out of there” or “Iâ€d be shitting my pants right now”. One of the films†other flaws are some of the plot holes involved. If Meganâ€s character was so at risk to react (or lack of reaction) in an anxiety-inducing situation, isnâ€t this something that would have been noted or noticed in her training? And one of the biggest ones involve the fact that Hannahâ€s body disappears from one morgue for three months and ends up being found and brought to another with no questions asked or news about the situation.

For what this film is, it is a very entertaining movie that gets the job done and brings intensity and likable characters and pretty strong performances. I honestly had less issues with this movie and the script than I did with the new Halloween. For an end of the year horror film that essentially came out of nowhere, itâ€s definitely worth watching.

A group of soldiers crash into a Nazi-occupied village where they discover the Nazis are performing sinister experiments on the people of the village.

Right from the get-go, Overlord is fast-paced and delivers thrills with an intense plane crash sequence. The whole sequence is intense and extremely well-filmed. From there, the intensity is very consistent, as is the cinematography. There is a long tracking tracking shot of a character running out of a building that looks brilliant. While this movie does feature a plot that has horror elements, the movie itself isnâ€t as full-blown horror as the trailers give off. Much of this movie is war and action based with horror playing a part in it. The zombies/mutants arenâ€t a huge presence or bring much carnage, but they are still integral to the story. This isnâ€t to say the movie itself doesnâ€t offer intensity, and it definitely offers plenty of great blood and gore.

There really isnâ€t one dull moment in the movie. The cast really helps boost the movie along and they all do an excellent job, most especially Wyatt Russell as the bad-ass corporal, and Mathilde Ollivier as the strong female character who helps the soldiers. For the most part the characters are likable, a couple of them start out annoying or unlikable but develop character arcs that redeem them. The lead character is way too nice for a character thrown into WWII and is opposed to the violent acts around him and it got annoying until the final act when he becomes more of a bad ass. Thereâ€s also a character who is a huge asshole that ends up redeeming himself. Iâ€m definitely glad this ultimately didnâ€t become a Cloverfield-universe film because they would have to jump through really ridiculous hoops to connect it, probably more ridiculous than Cloverfield Paradox. Much of the movie comes off as the plot of a video game and often plays out like one, and that offers much of the entertainment.

Itâ€s a pretty ridiculous plot and doesnâ€t go too in depth with the experiment or explore it too much, but this is still one wild and entertaining action-horror film.

In this remake of the 1977 cult classic, a young aspiring dancer attends a dance academy where sinister events are occurring behind closed doors.

Dario Argentoâ€s classic is known for its amazing score, cinematography, and great gore, Luca Guadagninoâ€s remake takes elements of the original story and tells its own tale, and it succeeds. This remake relies entirely on slow-burn suspense and minimal gore (at least to me it was minimal) to keep the viewer engaged. For a horror films thatâ€s two and half hours, I was never bored. There are moments sprinkled out, along with the score, that keep you hooked on trying to see what happens next. Sure there are moments involving the psychologist that I thought were dwelled on too much, and yeah it does come into play in one plot-point, but it wasnâ€t an aspect I cared much about. There are also some background events that brought in involving a terrorist group that didnâ€t feel necessary for me either. The dance sequences are fantastic and so well-choreographed, Dakota Johnson nails all of this, as do the supporting cast. The witches in this film are pretty damn evil and they make you feel uneasy. All of the slow-burn suspense builds up to one hell of a great and intense final act with a great twist I didnâ€t see coming, and one hell of a great blood bath sequence. Gudagninoâ€s direction is solid and is very reminiscent to how things were captured in his previous film Call Me By Your Name, and the score here doesnâ€t reach the level of the original film, but for this version of the film it works.

My only issues come from a not terrible, but kind of unnecessary Epilogue sequence, and there are some details that arenâ€t entirely laid out or some things not made entirely clear. Maybe this is intentional and will saved for the sequel? Who knows. And while Dakota Johnson did a serviceable job with what she had, her character Suzy is pretty bland and boring throughout a majority of the film. I was hoping she was would have been able to express a stronger performance in this film so she can eventually shed her Fifty Shades image and the talented actress she actually is. As mentioned though, she does master the physical performance of her role. Tilda Swinton is great as Madame Blanc as well as the male psychologist. And while Mia Goth starts with not much to do, her character builds into an extremely interesting characters and offers the stronger performance after Swinton.

This is definitely one of the best remakes ever made in my opinion, I didnâ€t absolutely love it, but I do find it a pretty great film and paid great respect to the original film while providing itâ€s own version.

PS, there is an end credit scene, very brief, but could ultimately be important.

Forty years after the traumatizing events on Halloween 1978, Laurie Strode has become a recluse who has been arming and preparing herself for the day Michael Myers returns to Haddonfield. As a result of this preparation, she caused a strain in her relationship with her daughter, who in turn tries to keep her own daughter away from Laurie. But as Laurie predicted, Michael escapes from custody and returns to his hometown to bring back terror to Haddonfield, but Laurie is ready.

Completely re-writing the events of the original series, and taking the series in a new direction, this sequel succeeds in giving us a new take of Laurie and her life. Like Halloween H20, we see Laurie traumatized after the events, but this is shown in a different way. She still has a taking for alcohol, but this time sheâ€s not in hiding, sheâ€s hidden, but only to prepare herself for Michaelâ€s return, and boy is she prepared. Her house is armed in almost every way imaginable. One of the most interesting things of this sequel is the family dynamics between the Strode ladies. The best scenes are the ones involving the women and their relationship with one another. I genuinely wish we had a lot more of this than what we got. Instead we are given some very lame side plots, one involving a documentary crew wanting to get inside the mind of Michael and Laurie and the events of that night. This plot is so pointless and really only serves a mean for Michael to get his mask back, and this could have been done in a much better way. Had this whole portion of the story been scrapped and more time focused on Laurie, her preparation and the relationship with her family prior to Michael showing up, it would have been a much stronger story. Needless to say, the documentary crew were pointless characters. We are also thrown into the high school drama of Laurieâ€s granddaughter Allyson, more pointless material and more characters we donâ€t need. There is an initial trio of Allyson, her best friend Vicky, and Vickyâ€s boyfriend Dave that I enjoyed. They were a trio of fun-loving friends. I wanted more of just these three characters, instead we are given Allysonâ€s boyfriend and the ultimate drama between them and a Halloween dance, and then we Allysonâ€s boyfriend random best friend. Apart from Allyson, her group of friends are so underdeveloped that they also only serve as body count characters. This is a shame because, like I mentioned, I liked the initial scene with Allyson, Vicky, Dave. I definitely wanted more of Vicky, thereâ€s a scene of her baby-sitting and her interaction with the kid is great. Had the dance aspect been scrapped and just focused on her and her friends†relationship and them being there for Allyson during her family drama, could have made them much stronger characters. Then there is Allyson herself, Andi Matichak does a decent enough job here as Allyson with the very little material she has. Andi and Jamie share some great scenes together, but when sheâ€s not with Jamie, her character is just so boring and she doesnâ€t have anything to do besides cry, scream, and run, apart from one moment towards the end of the movie. Thereâ€s also a random plot point involving Michaelâ€s new doctor that feels really odd to have in the movie and is really only used as a tool to get to the final act, other than that it was pointless. We also get random points of humor, some of it works, but most of it was just so cringeworthy and ruined some of the mood.

Now, as far as what this has all been built up to, Laurie and Michaelâ€s big encounter. What we got was fine, the whole cat and mouse sequence is intense, but I feel like they could have gone so much further than they did. The fight shown in the trailer is not present at all (apparently this was in the original ending that they cut). And I honestly feel a real fight would have made a much stronger final act. Donâ€t get me wrong, there are some great and badass moments that involve all 3 Strode women, but again, this all could have been so much better. Judy Greer does a fine job as Laurieâ€s daughter Karen and knocks it out of the park in the scenes with Jamie and Andi. But as mentioned, I wanted a lot more of her than we got. Jame Lee Curtis owns this movie, she brings so much pain, paranoia, and strength to the role. There are several moments where you feel so bad for Laurie and you see how much she tries to hold it together, Jamie hardcore delivers this. And her kill mode in the final act is great. Finally we have Michael Myers, he is ultra brutal in this film and still terrifying. Michaelâ€s portrayal by James Jude Courtney and the original Shape, Nick Castle, nail Michaelâ€s mannerisms and physical movements perfectly and itâ€s great seeing him roam around town seeking prey. Another one of the filmâ€s strengths lies in the great callbacks to not only the original film, but the original series in general, some are obvious, and some are more subtle depending on how many times youâ€ve watched the original series. While I didnâ€t find this entry as chilling or intense as the original, it is very well-done in terms of how it was made. The camera work is great as is the sound and lighting.

I know it may seem like I had a lot more negative things to say, but really it all amounts to the fact that we have random plot points that werenâ€t necessary, characters that range from pointless to underdeveloped, some cringe-worthy and not very funny humor, and a slightly underwhelming final act. Again, had this movie been much more focused on Laurieâ€s preparation, her trauma, and the dynamics between her and family, this would have worked for a much stronger story. But for ever weak spot, it does have its strengths on a technical scale, the acting, and Michael Myers himself and watching him stalk Haddonfield. If youâ€re a hardcore fan of the series, I canâ€t imagine you wonâ€t enjoy this film. Despite its flaws, itâ€s a very worthy sequel and does justice to Laurie that Resurrection pissed on in 2002.

The post IRRATIONAL FEAR Slashes Into Two New Horror Screenings appeared first on Slasher Studios.

A group of friend attend a traveling horror festival where a masked killer begins to stalk them and seeks to make them his newest victims.

I am still shocked that this movie managed to snag a large theatrical release. Almost everything about it looked like a straight to digital/very limited release. So I was very much excited to see that an original slasher film was getting a theatrical release. This movie turned out to be better than I expected. I had a blast with this film from beginning to end.

I fell in love with the characters almost instantly and found myself wanting to be a part of their group. They werenâ€t annoying or dramatic or stereotypical. Just a group of fun-loving and thrill seeking friends. Granted we are dropped hints early on, and occasionally throughout the film that this is some off-backstory regarding the lead and her relationship with her best friend and her best friends roommate that arenâ€t entirely brought to light. The setting of the film is fantastic. They brilliantly capture the spirit of horror attractions and the people who go through them. Not only this but they use it so perfectly in major moments of the film that brings a lot of intensity, especially in the final act where a major cat and mouse chase scene happens. As fun as this film was, it definitely could have upped the kill factor. It wasnâ€t as gory as I was expecting, which I can get passed, but there is a moment towards the end of the film where the writers chose to kill off two character simultaneously in the same lame fashion, clearly just so they could wrap things up and get down to the big chase mentioned above. There are some moments that occur that will make people question the logic of certain events, some of them I caught, but I wouldnâ€t necessarily hold it against the movie as a whole. It does go on a couple of minutes longer than it should have to reveal a final scene that I didnâ€t find all too necessary, mostly because it didnâ€t really provide anything interesting to leave with. Itâ€s also worth mentioning the great score by Bear McCreary who provided us with the fantastic score for 10 Cloverfield Lane, the score in this also adds a great amount of suspense to particular scenes. The cast here is clearly having fun with this film and their roles to the point where much of their behavior and dialogue felt pretty damn natural.

While our three main guys did a fine job with their respective roles, itâ€s the three leading ladies whom I felt brought the most life to the film. Amy Forsyth stars as our lead girl Amy. Forsyth does such a great job of showing this scholarly, shy girl and then really delivers it when her characters fights back. I would go so far as to say that the character of Natalie and Forsyth herself turns in a performance that could easily be considered a modern day Laurie Strode (yes I went there). We then have Reign Edwards as Natalieâ€s best friend Brooke. The pair share some solid chemistry and the two characters†friendship in sweet enough, and Edwards does a good job of being the teasing and prodding best friend who wants the best for Natalie. And finally we have Bex Taylor-Klaus as my favorite character in the movie, Taylor. Taylor-Klaus easily brings the most fun and sass to the film and her character. Watching Taylor feels as if I was really watching Taylor-Klaus just be herself on-screen. Sheâ€s a thrill-seeker with so much spunk and sass and isnâ€t even ashamed to jump at the jump scares in the attraction, no matter how brave she tries to present herself. As far as the killer, there isnâ€t exactly anything special or memorable about his appearance, but heâ€s still a creepy enough presence and enjoys taunting his victims.

I definitely feel this will be a movie that horror fans will either love or hate. Itâ€s definitely flawed as far as some writing choices, but when it comes to a fun and original slasher film thatâ€s actually seeing the light of day, with a fun cast and all around likable characters, and an amazing setting, I would say thatâ€s worth more than a couple of writing flaws in my book.

A young woman training to become a nun is recruited to join a priest and a villager to investigate the mysterious suicide of a nun. When they arrive at the church, they discover that an old evil is lurking within.

The titular nun Valak was introduced in The Conjuring 2, and while I thought that film was decent, Valak was easily the most terrifying part of the film. What made her scary was the subtlety of how she was used. Here she is relegated to roaring and lunging at characters in the dark. As a result, the film about the nun made the nun even less scary. The saddest part is that Valak isnâ€t used entirely that much here. The film itself is actually pretty dull compared to the two Conjuring films and Annabelle Creation, it ranks with the original Annabelle film in that lacks any real intensity or scares. What we get is extremely generic with jump scares that will only scare teenage girls or the most easily scared viewer. There is one scene towards the end involving a character having to maneuver their way through a creepy room of nuns that is a little intense, however, it bares a strong resemblance to a similar scene in the first Silent Hill movie. I do give it credit for providing a spooky atmosphere with its setting, however.

The film also suffers from a bland and uninteresting script in addition to bland and uninteresting characters. The lead character is supposed to have psychic visions, but this is hardly used in any way that matters to the plot. The character of Frenchie is made annoying by having him pipe in painfully unfunny comments. The priest character is written as your typical tortured priest who has his own past demons and wants to redeem himself. In a nutshell this is an extremely uninspired film. The best part of the whole film was the ending that shows how this film connects to The Conjuring. The performances by the cast were so-so, Tassia Farmiga in particular does as well as she possibly can with such a boring character. Had this not been a Conjuring universe film, I could easily see this being straight to DVD or buried somewhere on Netflix or Hulu.

Against the protests of his father, a young teen, along with his friends attend a huge horror festival. Expecting a night of fun with other horror fans and alcohol, the night turns into a blood bath as all of the attendees begin to be slaughtered by the people running and working at the festival.

Blood Fest essentially does what it seeks to do, and thatâ€s be fun and entertaining. We get a group of fun and pretty likable characters who love horror and discuss it often. The massacre starts up pretty quick and with a pretty great slaughter sequence of several people. We then follow the core group as they must survive against various horror movie villains such as masked killers, zombie, vampires, etc. Of course each one gets killed off one by one. All of the deaths in this movie bloody and gory in some of the best ways, even if the deaths themselves arenâ€t the most inventive. The cast all appear to love the movie their in and having a blast doing this, even the weaker performances are far from bad because of this.

It also features some pretty humorous moments. One I particularly enjoyed was a character obsessing over Zachary Levi (as himself) being the voice of Flynn Rider in Tangled. The downside of the movie is that this is essentially a lesser version of Cabin in the Woods. We have famous horror villains on the loose killing off the teens in horror movie fashion and in tropes, all while being surveyed and tracked by people in labs. Whatâ€s even more unfortunate is that the twist of the movie is so predictable it can easily be called within the first twenty minutes of the movie. Sure this is just supposed to be fun horror movie and realism should be thrown out the window, but you canâ€t help but question how all of this was executed so perfectly by the filmâ€s villain. Itâ€s just unrealistic how well it was pulled off. Despite these flaws, itâ€s still a fun film that is worth watching at least once.

Iâ€ll try to keep this as less of a rant as possible, but this movie was so terrible. I went in expecting it to be equivalent to The Bye Bye Man, but possibly better. I couldnâ€t have been more wrong. This movie makes Bye Bye Man look like Halloween. The script for the film is terrible. We have zero insight to any of the characters except for two of them. The most interesting one with any depth disappears early on, the other is lead character and she is so bland and boring and quite frankly, pretty bitchy and doesnâ€t seem to care much about her friends. Joey Kingâ€s character is the most interesting throughout the remainder of the movie because sheâ€s actually willing to try stop things and we see the effect it has on her. But because sheâ€s not the lead character we donâ€t get nearly as much time with her as we deserve. Apart from Kingâ€s character, the other two characters are beyond stupid and annoying. The character who disappears early on is very quickly forgotten by most of the group when the script makes it seem like the film will be about the friends trying to get her back. And eventually another character is soon forgotten about by the friends after they show signs of insanity, this character is never seen again afterwards.

This movie also has the worst case of “where are the parents” that Iâ€ve ever seen in a horror film. These teen girls are running around at late hours in the woods, the parents donâ€t seem to care, especially when one of the girls has gone missing and the town knows about it. We then get random bits of teen drama with a guy the main girl likes that feels forced, and we also have the forced fight between the two main best friends, and then the main girlâ€s sister gets thrown in the mix randomly just to amp up the drama. Ultimately and more than anything, this movie is extremely boring. It doesnâ€t even try to be scary or disturbing. Itâ€s really sad that the teaser trailer was more scary than the actual film, and the worst part about that is that a lot of the footage in that teaser isnâ€t even in the movie. Instead, anything “scary” just seems like the girls are having bad acid trips. I would have loved if this movie was a generic jump scare film like Bye Bye Man, it still would have been bad, but it would have had a lot more life in it than this one did. Sure it has some nice and dreary imagery, but thatâ€s as close to “creepy” as it gets. So much of the film is so hard to see as well because the lighting is so terrible. The only decent thing about this movie is the acting, Joey King delivering probably her best performance that Iâ€ve seen. Everyone else does fine, except for the lead girl who brought zero charisma to the role.

I wanted to walk out of this movie so bad for how boring and terrible it was and ultimately I left the theater angry for wasting my time with it. I genuinely canâ€t remember the last movie I hated this much or felt such negative feelings towards. It baffles me that this movie even failed to be a so bad itâ€s good movie like Bye Bye Man. Itâ€s so hard to put how bad this movie is into words without seeing it, but I wouldnâ€t recommend this movie to anyone. Iâ€d give this a zero if it wasnâ€t for Joey Kingâ€s performance.

After a young man steals a laptop, he unknowingly puts himself and friends in danger when he discovers the secrets held within the computer and the original owner willing to do whatever it takes to get it back.

The first Unfriended I admit I needed to watch a second time after being disappointed. Upon second viewing, I enjoyed it much more and found it to be an entertaining supernatural slasher film. With this sequel, like its predecessor, itâ€s all on the main characterâ€s laptop as he Skypes with his friends, browses the web, and uses Facebook. This aspect in both the original film and Dark Web are still well-done in its appearance. The acting in this film is also extremely well-done, most particularly from Rebecca Rittenhouse as Serena. Sure this movie is much more darker than the first movie, but itâ€s also much more boring, uninteresting, and unengaging. It had some great ideas going for it, but they seemed to make the events happening extremely ridiculous. A better movie depicting a similar concept was The Den. Appearance-wise that film may not be as good, but it gets the point across much easier and wasnâ€t as far-fetched, on top of that it was much more disturbing. Even the movie Ratter was a better film. Both Unfriended movies are supposed to be cautionary tales of the internet and social media, but the original film develops its themes a lot better than this one. As far as characters go, the ones here are just as bland and boring as the film itself, which made me not care about their fate. While the characters in the original werenâ€t likable either, at least we were essentially SUPPOSED to not like them, and even when there wasnâ€t horror happening they were at least entertaining to watch, and even more so during the horror.

Essentially I think this sequel tried to take itself too seriously to the point where it became a bit too ridiculous and they put way too much thought into it. There were points were when the villains appeared on-screen and they turned to static (similar to the segment in V/H/S with the static killer). Maybe I donâ€t know how much power hackers actually have, but much of the stuff that happens via the internet seemed way too over-the-top for me to believe to the point where a plot twist involving the supernatural would have made more sense.

If you want a better film depicting hacking or dark web type of stuff, watch the superior films The Den or Ratter. Both better and much more disturbing. The passable acting and visual presentation do nothing to make this a good film.

Taking place before the first film, this prequel gives us a glimpse of how the infamous Purge came to be. The citizens of Staten Island find themselves as the test experiments with prize money rewarded to them if they choose to participate. But as we already know, this doesnâ€t end too well for these citizens and America.

After a terrible first film, and two fun and thrilling sequels, it was almost inevitable that a prequel would come about. And like most prequels, this one isnâ€t exactly necessary. Granted it is interesting to see what the initial purpose of the Purge was and how exactly it came to be the terrifying blood both weâ€ve come to know it for, as well as see reasons why some would participate. This whole idea was made up by Marisa Tomeiâ€s character to be used as a psychological experiment, but it ultimately goes awry in way she couldnâ€t imagine. This film is easily the darkest entry of the films, going in some pretty hefty territories, especially a sequences involving Purgers dressed as KKK members, just to give you an idea. Of course it wouldnâ€t be Purge film without its politics thrown in. Some work, and some are a bit groan-worthy. We have a scene where Purgers dressed as policemen surround a wounded black man, presumably ready to beat him to death. And while I suppose this could be said for the other films, this movie doesnâ€t really have much of a plot and is pretty all over the place.

Now, we do have some likable protagonists and you do root for them, even if theyâ€re particularly all that special. However, I love the sassy black woman played by Orange is the New Black actress Mugga, she was the comic relief that didnâ€t overstay her welcome. Our leading male played Yâ€lan Noel I actually found a lot more likable than Frank Grilloâ€s character from Anarchy and Election Year. Granted they both were the tough bad ass heroes, Noelâ€s character felt at least a bit more real and not a tough federal agent guy. Lex Scott Davis however comes off as the most real character of them all. She shows great care for those around her and is willing to sacrifice herself in order to save them. Both Noel and Davis really deliver with their performances. Now we get to one of the more unfortunate aspects and that is the fact that Marisa Tomei is totally wasted in this film. She gets about 7-10 minutes of screen time and she doesnâ€t get much to do with that screen time besides talk to a news camera in her first scene and watch surveillance footage of the mayhem for most of her scenes. Itâ€s only when her character develops an arc and might actually get to go somewhere, her character gets tossed aside. This ultimately made the casting of Tomei a slap in the face and they could have just cast a nobody in the role.

The thing with The First Purge is that, as a prequel, itâ€s exactly what you would expect, however, I think this would have been so much better had this been the actual first film in the series as opposed to the one we got. This movie does have what you want from a Purge film however, crazy violence, and protagonists giving Purgers their just deserts. It also helps the main guy and girl are very likable. If youâ€re a fan of the franchise, I canâ€t imagine you wonâ€t like this one. Those who arenâ€t fans wonâ€t be won over.

Itâ€s that time of year again to break out the I Know What You Did Last Summer films. Obviously we have the original as the primary watch, but we also have I Still Know, and for the daring, Iâ€ll Always Know. We all know the original film is a classic and many still love it, I know I still love it, and it is the best film of the three hands-down. However, I have to give some defense to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

One of the biggest complaints about the original film is how useless Julie James is. I 100% agree with this. Jennifer Love Hewittâ€s performance was solid, but all Julie did was whine, mope, and scream and was basically a slap in the face to true final girls. However, in I Still Know, I see a much better version of Julie than we got in the original film. Sure she can still be mopey and whiney, but unlike the first movie, she has more of a motive for this. The events of the first film made her extremely paranoid, and it work well here in how itâ€s portrayed. But as the events of the film progress, we start to see Julie become a stronger character and willing to face Ben Willis as opposed to run and hide like she did in the first film. I always love her big moment at the end when sheâ€s shooting the hell out of the Fisherman and yells “JUST! FUCKING! DIE!” I honestly think they really redeemed the character of Julie after the first film, and Jennifer really delivered the performance even more than she did in the first movie.

Apart from Julie, the character of Ray also is at least given more to do other than be a pathetic excuse of a lead male. Granted he is spending the majority of the movie just trying to get to Julie, but at least here heâ€s given more to do and has a heroic enough moment at the end.

In addition to the returning characters, weâ€re given some fun supporting ones. I think Brandy was a great addition to the cast as Karla, Julieâ€s new best friend. Now sheâ€s definitely not Sarah Michelle Gellar/Helen. But Karla was a character that I felt Julie needed. She didnâ€t let Julie push her around and she basically was telling Julie to stop moping, get off her ass, and enjoy herself. Itâ€s unfortunate that we didnâ€t get to see Karla using her kickboxing put to the test against the Fisherman, but she at least gets a decent, but brief chase scene. Again, this pales compared to the classic chase and fight scene Sarah/Helen gets, but itâ€s something. Mekhi Phiferâ€s character Tyrell, while he is dick for his last portion of screen time in the movie, at least heâ€s a dick you donâ€t get annoyed by unlike Barry who was spoiled rich boy who thought he was tougher than he was. Tyrell actually had some comical moments even when he was being a dick, mostly when heâ€s trying to bone his girlfriend. Matthew Settleâ€s character, the love struck Will was also likable. You did feel for the guy who really seemed to try be a friend for Julie but also trying to win her affection. Though when itâ€s revealed heâ€s “BENâ€S-SON!” Settle does give the performance a bit too much cheese. And a huge shout out has to be given to Jennifer Espositio as the snarky bartender Nancy. For me was the best character of the film, and I really wanted more bad ass moments from her, she did not deserve the lame death she got. Like for real, how hard was it to push the guy off of her? She deserved a better death than that.

Unfortunately we also have our weak character in Jack Blackâ€s stoner character Titus, and we have the boring “red-herring” characters of Estes and Mr. Brooks, the creepy voodoo guy and the douchebag manager of the hotel.

One thing also worth praising about the movie is the great location. The characterâ€s being trapped on an island during storm that conveniently leaves them without safety boats and power, as cheesy as it is, it work for the film. The only real downside is that we donâ€t get the July 4thfeel like we did in the first movie. We only get a mention that itâ€s the 4thof July and thatâ€s it. But anyway, within the island we get some great chase sequences around the island, I already mentioned Karlaâ€s, but the prelude to Karlaâ€s chase scene comes in the form of another great chase scene involving Karla, Nancy, and Julie. They run from the kitchen following Tyrellâ€s death, up the stairs, and ultimately up into the attic where they have to stay on the beams so they donâ€t fall through the floor/ceiling(?) that ultimately leads to Karlaâ€s chase. And then we have the extremely creepy scene in the storm shelter.

Itâ€s also a plus that we have higher body count.

To sum up this whole article, I really think I Still Know What You Did Last Summer gets too much hate. Is it in the same league as the first or have the intensity? No, definitely not. But when you think about it, there are some things that it does improve on from the first, primarily Julie as a character, the body count, and slightly more likable characters. When it comes down to it, I think itâ€s fair to say that even if I Still Know isnâ€t a particularly good movie (besides those 3 annoying above characters, the dialogue and farfetched plot points can be cringe-worthy), itâ€s pure, cheesy fun.

As all of this unfolds, she begins to uncover secrets about her mother she never knew. Hereditary is being raved as the scariest movie as The Exorcist and completely horrific and disturbing. While I can probably understand this for some viewers, this movie didn’t really do much for me. After personally being terrified by A24’s other horror film The Witch, Hereditary’s trailer gave me the same vibes and hopes that this would be just a scary. Unfortunately, this movie really didn’t do much for me, however, that’s not to say this doesn’t feature some pretty horrific and disturbing imagery, it definitely succeeds there. There is a depiction of decapitation towards the end that easily is one of the more horrific things I’ve seen in horror in a long time. The only thing is, when it comes to the horror, this doesn’t occur until roughly around the last half hour or so. Everything prior to that is a slow-building exposition of the family and their troubles. This whole first half to me gives way more exposition than I felt we needed. After a while I grew tired of all the family drama. To be fair, it’s all done extremely well and the actors are all fantastic, but it just felt like it took up more of the movie than it needed to. When the horror finally does happen it picks up more and does a good job of hooking you. But at the same time, we have just been watching a dark family drama and when the horror comes, it feels a bit uneven tonally. As far as the horror goes, it is engrossing, but when everything begins to happen, and especially in the final act, it all feels so familiar and not exactly original. I couldn’t help but think about how much of it reminded me of Paranormal Activity 3-6. But to Hereditary’s credit, that plot-point works better there. As far as that aspect goes, I feel like they had to pack in a bit too much in order to get to the horror side of things, essentially they over-complicated things more than they should have. All of this aside, I do love how they took the elements of grief and mental illness to help push it towards the horror side, this aspect of the movie is what I loved the most about it. Finally, we have the performances, Toni Collette knocks it out of the park as the lead, she gets so into character and we see her struggles as the matriarch trying to keep her family and sanity together the best way she can while all of this mayhem is going on around her. Ann Dowd also turns in a great performance as a woman whom Collette meets at a grief counsel meeting. There is something so intriguing with Dowd’s character and performance and it’s a shame we didn’t get more of her, especially towards the end. Newcomer Milly Shaprio stars as Collette’s peculiar daughter Charlie. Charlie is also a character who is so interesting and one you want to learn so much more about, which we unfortunately don’t get a whole lot of, especially when she’s a key point to the story. Alex Wolff was hit or miss as the oldest son, in some scenes he does a great job, but in some scenes he’s laughable, but that probably has to do with how poorly he’s written as a whiny and bratty child. Gabriel Byrne does a fine job as well as really the only normal member of the family and sells the part of the husband/father at a loss of what to do as his family falls apart. I can definitely understand why many are loving Hereditary and why many can find it terrifying. Unfortunately, this one didn’t do much for me, but I most certainly don’t find it a bad movie at all. It has some great ideas at hand, can be pretty horrific, and the acting is solid, but there were issues I had with the tonal balance/transition, the pace of the film, and aspects of the script. –Cody Landman

When one of the friends gets attacked by what appears to be an animal, they learn it is actually a virus that turns those affected into animal-like beings with a taste for flesh. Feral’s story isn’t entirely the most original story, but it’s still a fun creature feature in the woods horror film. One of the major focuses of the story is that our lead is in her own moral dilemma about not wanting to kill any of her friends infected, believing they can be cured. At time this can be a bit frustrating when it becomes pretty clear there’s no saving some of these people and despite be told several times there’s no cure by the lonely hermit they meet. For me personally, one of the film’s biggest weaknesses is that it does start up the events too soon resulting in some massive under-development between the characters. The character that gets attacked spends basically the whole movie unconscious, others get killed off right when certain character dynamics are being established and confronted. The biggest issue arises between the lead and her girlfriend. It’s shown that the lead, Alice, is facing trouble with her father with her newfound sexuality, but it only slightly establishes this and how it affects the relationship, let alone the fact that after a while you forget the two characters are even dating. The lead herself is actually really bad ass and takes action whenever and however she can. As far as the creatures, the creatures are really well done, although they can really resemble the Crawlers from The Descent quite a bit in not just appearance but behavior. The performances in this film are decent for the most part. Scout Taylor-Compton turns in a strong performance as Alice and perfectly captures the character’s tough and bad ass side while also showing her care for her friends, and while I wish we would have gotten more of these scenes, she does great in the scenes where we do get glimpses of Alice’s weaknesses. Olivia Luccardi stars as Alice’s girlfriend Jules. She also does very well in this role, but she also doesn’t get entirely much to do, but in the scenes where she basically has to be Alice’s conscience and the one holding her together, she does well. Lew Temple does a fine job in his role as the hermit who knows a thing or two about the virus, what he does well is leaving us guessing whether to see him as a crazed villain or the smartest person in the movie. Feral is most certainly flawed, especially in terms of character development, but it succeeds in being a fun creature feature with a strong performance by Scout Taylor-Compton. –Cody Landman

When they return home they realize something evil has come back with them and isn’t finished playing the game. Now they must play the game or die. Truth or Dare is a PG-13 teen horror film that is exactly what you’d expect it to be. Silly teen drama, over-the-top, and plenty of clichés. However, despite this the movie is extremely fun from beginning to end. The events actually start up pretty quick and once the games begin it’s one truth or dare after the other. Some the dares are pretty thrilling, a rooftop scene was pretty intense, and the truths that are revealed tear the friends apart even in the dire circumstances. The laughs in the film didn’t work for me at all, and it goes to some pretty great lengths as far as revealing rules about the game and the origin of the spirit coming after them. On top of this it does have some plot holes, but to its credit it does put up a fight to try fill some of them up, even it doesn’t always work. In terms of characters, some are pretty cardboard cut-outs like Tyler Posey’s leading male character, Lucy Hale’s good girl character, and the cocky asshole played by Sam Lerner. Violett Beane’s character Markey was a character I feel should have been given a lot more to do other than storm out of the room crying every time she hears a truth she doesn’t like, and with that brought up some groan-worthy teen drama. What sucks is that Markey has so much edge to her when she wasn’t all about her drama and could be a total bad ass, so I wish more focus had been given to that side of her instead of all her drama between Hale and Posey’s characters. For the most part though the characters are developed well-enough. The performances are passable, but it’s really Hale and most especially Beane who turn in the most standout performances. The biggest thing I praise the movie for is its dark ending. While I did love that the ending was dark, it was actually clever in how it ties into events and conversations that happen very early on in the movie. Truth or Dare probably won’t be remembered in the future and it is far from an all out good movie, but if you want to watch a fun horror film that is entertaining from beginning to end with a couple of thrills and a hot cast, this one will do the job. –Cody Landman
