Tim’s Slasher Tweet Review: “Carnivore” (2000)

As you may know, We are starting a new feature here at Slasher Studios: tweet-by-tweet reviews. We bring you our another tweet-by-tweet movie review today from guest horror critic Tim Schilling. The idea behind the concept: We take a movie and give you a running commentary through twitter. After the film is done, we will post the review over here at Slasher Studios. Tonight we take a look at the low budget “Carnivore”…does it deliver the gory goods?

Thoughts before the film:
I’ve seen two movies so far out of this 8 packs, one terrible and one pretty good. Please be another good one?

While watching the film:
0:02 This movie was made in 2000 I believe, but so far it looks like it’s from the 70’s. Good or bad?
0:04 Gets stabbed by a needle that was supposed to knock out a monster, “this is bloody great”
0:05 And dies….
0:08 This movie likes the color blue. But it’s a little too much blue.
0:13 Over acting at its finest.
0:17 This is such a 70’s throwback.
0:18 I mean… The hair styles in this movie has been extinct for decades.
0:24 The creature reminds me of a troll doll…And whenever they show it, they play Tom & Jerry music.
0:29 Note: don’t overuse the blue filter. Cause the moon, it ain’t blue.
0:32 I’ll refer the creature as troll doll.
0:32 So the troll doll tried forever to get out of the house, just to go back in through the… chimney?
0:43 Am I watching porn or what? 2 whole minutes of titty suckin.
0:48 The troll doll sounds like an angry midget.
0:59 This house isn’t that big, and there’s nothing in it. Why can’t they find troll doll?!
1:04 “no fuck ups.” classy president.
1:05 Oh troll doll can speak English alright.
1:08 Are we in the middle ages now…? The soundtrack seems to think so.
1:11 The troll doll only attack people when they: a) are scared or b) having sex.

Overall:
I didn’t care for the weak story, no jumps or scares, but #Carnivore had a 70’s feel that I loved and a quarkiness that left it interesting.

The Gore, The Merrier: “ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest II” Review

ChromeSkull picks up immediately after the events of Laid to Rest; actually, it starts right up as Tommy and Princess drive off into the sunrise, leaving the blood soaked convenience store far behind them. ChromeSkull -whose face currently has the consistency of a burning candle- is rushed off in an ambulance by some mysterious peeps, Preston (Brian Austin Green) being the front man.

3 months later: ChromeSkull is now recouped and his face is -after extensive surgery- no longer like a melting tub of butter… not completely, at least. He’s also not alone. There’s a system of people working under ole’ Chromey, with Preston basically in the role of ‘Assistant to the Regional Manager’. Though, the two have their differences. Eager to get back into the game, ChromeSkull swiftly finds another target; Jess, a young hottie suffering from a rare condition that’s making her lose her eyesight with a swiftness. Meanwhile, Tommy (Thomas Dekker) is still plagued by all the horrid shit that happened to him at the convenience store during the first film. Once bodies start piling again, the local police force bring him in for questioning.

Don’t worry, there’s an explanation as to why Chromey is up and kickin’ and killin’ again. Some people will probably find it ridiculous, but if they do I would question why they are watching a movie like this in the first place. It’s just a simple little thing that is more than enough to get the ball rollin’.

I’ll say nearly everything is better this time around. Laid to Rest was a fantastic little B-Horror film that was most exciting due to how mean spirited it was. The acting was mostly bad and I couldn’t really sympathize with the lead as much as I wanted to. Her saving grace was her hotness. You don’t even learn anything about her until the final scenes, and all that “I woke up in a dead box” shit was rather laughable. The movie mainly catered to me for all the creative kills and the tough as nails perpetrator.

While Laid to Rest 2 put me on the edge of my seat anticipating what kind of imaginative grue was gonna splatter my screen next, I was also into the story and characters. Most horror sequels fail so hard when trying to provide any type of exploration into a killer you previously knew zilch about, but I was much impressed with all the goings on in the ChromeSkull camp. There’s still a lot of mystery as far as the character himself, which is nice, but I thought the introduction of a crew backing him was a sweet touch.

Acting is WAY more solid this time around. Nobody’s gonna be walking away with Oscars after this or anything, but in comparison to the first film, ChromeSkull is The Shawshank Redemption. Mimi Michaels is the new damsel in distress, Jess, a poor little thing that gets nabbed out of her friends house after getting’ lit on some medical Mary Jane. I felt so much for this character because you know who she is from the get go; a timid sweetheart in fear of losing her eyesight. And Michaels’ left pinky toe could give a more sincere performance than Bobbi Sue Luther (from the first film) could muster up out of her whole body…. yes, even including those boobs.

***Spoilers ahead***

Gotta give mega props to casting Brian Austin Green as Preston, the second man in command at Chromeskull’s R’ Us. Mr. Green has came a long way from his D.J. days at 90210 High, but if you’ve seen some of his more recent roles -Sarah Connor Chronicles, for example- you won’t be that surprised. Preston is a prick, seemingly tired of cleaning and tying up all the loose ends that Chromey leaves, but in the process he’s developed a boner for murder himself. Green plays a motherfucking maniac pretty damn well, and all this confrontation with his character leads to so much insanity in the last twenty minutes of the film that you can barely breathe.

***Safe to read again****

Thomas Dekker reprises his role of Tommy from the first film. Wow, this dude can grow hair quicker than a fucking werewolf. After the opening, this film is supposed to take place three months later, and Tommy goes from a shaved head to a Jared Leto mop -only less douchey looking-… his eyebrows grew, too! He also doesn’t really come off as the same obnoxious raver kid either, but that’s okay. I mean, damn, dude almost died n’ all. Anyhow, Dekker pulls off the whole “I’m takin’ pills and can’t sleep and miss my friend and shit… here I am again” thing really well, and he’s kind of a favorite of mine.

***Spoilers ahead***

Another new face into the fold is genre vet Danielle Harris (Hatchet 2, Stake Land, Halloween 4), as Spann, another member of the Chromeskull camp. While her role isn’t that big, it’s very important, and it’s also something new and refreshing for the usual scream queen. There’s not a whole lot known about Spann, but wowzers, Harris looks so damn good all business skirt and high heels and shit. Loved it.

***Safe to read again***

Christopher Allen Nelson and Owain Yeoman are pretty on point in their law enforcement personas as well, especially Yeoman. Then there’s Nick Principe returning as ChromeSkull. Like the first time around, he’s a quiet one, but holy fuck intimidating, and the character is the best text messaging slasher to date.

Won’t go much into the gore, but fans of Laid to Rest will certainly be pleased. Almost Human Inc. is on FX again, and damn there is just as many ingenious kills as there were in the first film. Not to mention, all the extra work put into ChromeSkull himself is beautifully disgusting. I don’t want to say the sequel owns the first film, because that shit was bonkers, but it’s definitely an equal. No complaints here.

Wrapping it up, if you can deal with a story that takes a bit more time to get going then Laid to Rest 2 should definitely make you smile. It does what a sequel should do; it makes improvements, and that is a rarity. I’ll definitely recommend it to fans of the first, as well as people previously disappointed and just slasher fans in general. It certainly will deliver if a gorefest is your pursuit. Highly enjoyable.

P.S. – I failed to mention that my ears weren’t plagued this time around with a lame ass soundtrack. The score itself is great, and the song played for the ending sets such a great tone for the slo-mo sequence before the credits role. Fucking excellent. Though, I would have welcomed “Sexy Bitches are my favorite Kind of Bitches” (there is a hint to it) again… that shit rules.

Slasher Studios Horror Film Club: “Creepshow” (1982)

Today for you from Slasher Studios Film Club we have for you a brand new movie and two brand new reviews. This week we are taking on the anthology classic “Creepshow” in all its wonderful comic book style glory! Directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King and starring Ted Danson, Leslie Nielsen, Hal Holbrook, E.G. Marshall, Gaylen Ross, Adrienne Barbeau and Ed Harris, the box office hit made over $21 million on a budget of just $9 million. Let’s take on “Creepshow!”

Wanna join the club?
Here are the “rules” of our facebook group: Once a week we will select a horror film to watch and review. For that week, all the posts on this page will be related to that particular film. Feel free to post trailers, tv spots, posters, stills…anything you want from the film. MOST IMPORTANT: I want you to post your review of the film. After all, this is a horror club! At the end of the week, I will compile all of the reviews and put them on the Slasher Studios site. So have fun! The only other rule I want to stick to is to only post things related to the film in question for the week. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Thanks everyone and let’s see this happen!

The biggest plus about being part of this movie club is that a film may be selected that you may have never seen before. Maybe you end up enjoying it, maybe you ended up…not enjoying it. With Creepshow, the outcome for me was the latter.

The film Creepshow has 5 different stories. One story involving a father coming back from the dead for Father’s Day cake he never received. The 2nd being about a weird farmer who encounters a meteor who’s ooze causes things to turn into plant life. The 3rd involving a raging husband out to seek revenge on his wife and her love. The 4th about a creature terrorizing a college campus. And the final story is about a rich jerk who has an encounter with some cockroaches.

While I enjoy films with multiple storylines, this one just didn’t do it for me. The only decent story was the 3rd story with the revenge-seeking husband. The others were just a bit too boring. I didn’t expect the stories too be really horrific “Tales From the Crypt” like, but I at least expected a few shits and giggles from them, which I did not receive. The acting was decent though too by a good cast such as Leslie Nielson, Ed Harris, Adrienne Barbeau, Ted Danson, and Stephen King even has a role in it. I can see how some may enjoy this film, but it just wasn’t for me.

Joshua Dean
Creepshow. The schlock horror fan’s wet dream.
Written by Stephen King, directed by George A. Romero, and featuring an all-star cast (led by Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Viveca Lindfors, Carrie Nye, Ted Danson, E.G. Marshall, Leslie Nielsen, Ed Harris, and Stephen King himself!), the film is essentially a spin on the “Tales From The Crypt” comic series and anthology film.

The wraparound story, concerning a boy whose horror-hating father tosses out his favorite comic book, is almost laughable, but somehow, sets a dark, dreary, and creepy scene. The tales are all very much comical and hokey, yet there is a real ominous, spooky feel to the entire film. The strangest thing about the film, though, which, up until the equally fun Trick ‘r Treat, hadn’t been done since, is that every segment has the same dark, dreary, yet fun atmosphere.

The stories themselves are very basic and predictable, but are crafted so well that they keep you hooked, and the cast is excellent. Adrienne Barbeau shines as the shrewish booze-drenched wife of a respectable, mild-mannered professor (Hal Holbrook); Carrie Nye is deliciously sinister as the matriarch of a money-grubbing clan whose past has come back to haunt them; Leslie Nielsen and E.G. Marshall are wonderfully sadistic and heartless as the villainous leads in their respective stories; and King himself is just flat-out hilarious.

King’s writing is not his usual standard, but as this is essentially a tribute to schlock horror, I don’t think he intends it to be. Definitely a favorite of mine, Creepshow is one no horror fan (I’m looking at you, Jeffrey Lee!*) should not miss.

Tim’s Slasher Tweet Reviews: “Creepy Crawlers” (2000)

We are starting a new feature here at Slasher Studios. We bring you our very first tweet-by-tweet movie review today from guest horror critic Tim Schilling. The idea behind the concept: We take a movie and give you a running commentary through twitter. After the film is done, we will post the review over here at Slasher Studios. Sounds like fun, right? Well today’s movie is the wonderfully cheesy “Creepy Crawlers” (also known as “They Nest”), a made for television gross out flick from 2000.

“Creepy Crawlers” begins with our hero, Dr. Ben Cahill, a nab stressed by marital problems and alcohol that he freezes up under pressure in the emergency room. To get his act back together, he decides to unwind a few months in the house he and his ex bought on Orr island, an insignificant (former) fishermen place off the coast of Maine. He almost immediately becomes the butt of spite from a gang of local nobodies. After the doctor started examining, at the request of the reasonable sheriff Hobbs who leans to his side, some animal and human corpses with strange internal as well as external injuries, one of the brutes, not so handy handyman Jack Wald, has a fatal nocturnal accident crashing into Dr. Cahill’s car.

The doctor observes one of the red cockroaches which recently infest the island has pincers, most unusual, reads up and contacts the university entomology department, where this African species isn’t too well-known either. Jack’s even dumber brother Eamon Wald uses violence which ends up causing the sheriff’s death, so the doc has no other help then the enterprising local store clerk Nell Bartle, who takes a liking to the only educated men around, to continue investigating fighting off Eamon’s gang and as they find out how bad the danger is, try to evacuate…

Thoughts before the film:
#CreepyCrawlers don’t even know what it’s about, chose this movie based on the DVD art. Bad idea? we’ll seeeee….

While watching the film:
0:01 #CreepyCrawlers so much better than the other movies in this 8 pack already, is there hope?
0:13 I make weird faces at cockroaches too… #CreepyCrawlers
0:22 Yelling at cockroaches makes them go away only .000006% of the time. #CreepyCrawlers
0:24 The music when there’s a bug on screen is funny cause it reminds me of clown music. Clown cockroaches. #CreepyCrawlers
0:25 This island is full of gingers! #CreepyCrawlers
0:33 Ohh I get it, this is a horror comedy. It’s actually working so far! #CreepyCrawlers
0:36 Oh no run hamster run!! #CreepyCrawlers
0:59 At least the dead dogs in this movie aren’t stuffed animals…#CreepyCrawlers
1:00 Why are rednecks so stupid!? In the words of Jeepers Creepers: INBREEDING!! #CreepyCrawlers
1:03 That was literally a tsunami of cockroaches. #CreepyCrawlers
1:04 Oh big mama cockroach. #CreepyCrawlers
1:17 Ah flying cockroaches! These things are like Pokemon. #CreepyCrawlers
1:27 Typical ending, of course there was one bug left that went on to a bigger city! #CreepyCrawlers

Overall:
I was surprised at how good #CreepyCrawlers was. Different music, funny at parts, cared for the characters, and overall good production.
