Tim’s Horror Tweet Reviews: “Puppet Master II” (1990)

Our resident twitter reviewer Tim Schilling is back with another tweet by tweet review looking at the next movie in the Puppet Master series: Puppet Master 2. This was the first of the series I saw at a very young age and the weirdness of the film has grown on me over the years. But..is the film too weird for Tim or does the bizarre nature of this sequel still hold some appeal?

Thoughts before the film:
What am I getting myself into…

Thoughts while watching:
0:02 Is there actually a story/any continuity to this one?
0:08 I don’t get why ghost hunters are in the hotel… There were like 3 survivors that saw killer puppets. Not ghosts!
0:10 Damn rednecks.
0:21 Okay so there’s some kind of story to this one… I think.
0:24 What would a ghost hunter REALLY think of if they saw a possessed puppet run across their monitor?
0:28 That guy with the face mask thing was terrifying.
0:36 Why would the puppets even waste their time killing these rednecks?
0:38 Oh I see, there was an actual story going on so they needed to kill the rednecks.
0:48 Whatever plot this established in the beginning is long gone now, I have no idea what’s going on.
1:00 These movies are very forgettable. I can’t follow a thing that’s going on.
1:10 Everyone is dying the same way… By that puppet that lights people on fire.
1:11 Gross you can put your mask back on.
1:17 What’s with the green blood in this series?
1:20 What the heck was that creepy life size puppet woman thing!? I’m sure I would know what it was if this story made any sense AT ALL.

Final Verdict:
Like the first one, #PuppetMaster2 made no sense at all. Whatever was there for a story was changing every five minutes by something that was even more confusing. Also, the puppets were lame compared to the first. They weren’t even funny!

Tim’s Horror Tweet Reviews: “Puppet Master” (1989)

If you were a horror movie kid growing up in the late 80’s and early 90’s with cable, there was only one place to turn for horror delights: USA Network. With programs like Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Hitchhiker, Saturday Nightmare, and Up All Night, there was plenty of horror treats to go around. If there was one series USA Network loved more than any it was the Puppet Master series. Killer dolls, a beautiful score, and some awesome Full Moon goodness, “Puppet Master” was a step above the direct to video norm and USA took full advantage of it. Ahh..those were the days. Taking a look at the original “Puppet Master”, Tim Schilling is back with a brand new twitter review.

Thoughts before the film:
I have no idea why I want to watch this series so bad recently. It seems just absolutely ridiculous, but here we go!

Thoughts while watching:
0:03 Is this considered a slasher? I really don’t know much about these movies.
0:08 All this is doing so far is making me want to watch Pinocchio.
0:18 What the heck kinda doctors are these!?
0:22 Is there an actual story to this or is it just a bunch of random scenes?
0:34 This makes no sense. Like at all.
0:38 That puppet is pretty damn ugly.
0:48 For real this movie has a different story line every 5 minutes.
0:50 I love the puppets though. They’re so cool the way they move.
0:54 This puppet is puking up leaches. Okay what the heck.
1:00 Actually this is reminding me of and making me want to watch Small Soldiers. LOVE that movie.
1:02 Why do you make no sense, plot?
1:13 This scene is reminding me of Happy Birthday to Me.
1:17 These puppets are badass.
1:24 That ending was way too confusing. Like I didn’t have a hard enough time trying to follow the story!

Final Verdict:
Besides having almost no plot at all and ridiculously confusing, #Puppetmaster was still interesting to say the least. It’s a very weird movie, something you can’t really explain unless you show them the entire thing. The puppets were hilarious and awesome though.

Death of the Day–Stu Gets His Television Break in “Scream”

Stu finally gets what is coming to him at the end of this epic battle with the great Sydney. As they struggle through the house and feathers fly, Stu is kicked in the crotch, bitten on the hand and slammed in the head with a vase. All futile attempts and escape from Sydney until she unleashes her inner Freddy and fries the bloodied Stu with the TV. There are many incredible deaths found within the Scream series, but this one is a bit unique as the cause of death is electrocution from a television set. Gotta love the old tube televisions….

Tim’s Slasher Tweet Reviews: “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (2010)

Horror remakes are actively hated among most in the horror world. Why remake a movie that was perfect the first time? That being said, they are instant moneymakers at the box office and the “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake was no exception grossing over $120 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. This film instantly became the “most hated” of the major horror franchise remakes. Tim Schilling investigates in his tweet by tweet review that this new “Nightmare” may not be as bad as it seems.

Thoughts before the film:
Finishing off my ANOES series of reviews with the remake of the movie that started it all. I do like this one for the record.

Thoughts while watching:
0:04 Mmm Rooney Mara.
0:09 I love the original Freddy, but the one in the remake isn’t bad. He’s so creepy.
0:14 It’s impossible to top the original scene when Freddy’s face goes through the wall.
0:20 I love the scene when the chick falls asleep in class, the whole thing just looks great.
0:30 Somethings in this movie are done better than the original and some way way worse.
0:36 His computer just went into sleep mode, since this is supposed to be a modern reimage would Freddy go after that?
0:42 I’d be the first one to die in one of these movies. I love sleep too much.
0:48 I don’t know how I feel about the pedo Freddy backstory.
0:53 Why would you tell your daughter she was abused as child in front of her friends? Bitch move.
1:00 Freddy in this one just isn’t on Elm Street, he can be wherever these kids moved to.
1:03 I don’t think micro naps are a real thing… Are they?
1:07 I bet they were just in a Walgreens. Ew.
1:27 Come on Freddy just die.
1:28 I love that nancy says you’re in my world now bitch instead of Freddy.

Final Verdict:
I don’t think the remake of #ANightmareOnElmStreet is bad at all. You can’t really compare it to the original because there are a lot of things different about it. It was kind of a remake of a few different Freddy films. The movie looked great too, very dark, & decent acting.

Lucas Masson’s “Babysitting” is a Deliciously Diabolical Slasher Surprise

Babysitting is something we have all had to do at one point in our lives. It could be for our younger siblings, the neighbors across the street, or an unknown stranger. It doesn’t really matter. I mean who hasn’t spent at least one night in an unknown house, gobbling snacks, and getting paid for doing as little work as possible? The subject of babysitting is at hand in our slasher of the day, a short film from France from writer/director Lucas Masson entitled, just that, “Baby-Sitting.” The film takes a look at a night that is about to go terribly wrong when a young woman breaks the rules while babysitting and is forced to pay the price.

As “Baby-Sitting” begins we meet a young woman named Elise who is walking over to a neighbor’s house to babysit two young children, a boy and a girl, she doesn’t know. The parents are willing to pay her a premium price for babysitting and it is simply an offer she cannot refuse. When she arrives at the house, something seems off. The kids (brilliantly creepy Vasco Bailly-Gentaud and Prune Richard) stare at Elise with a blank, cold glaze. They are unresponsive to anything around them. They don’t laugh, they don’t smile..it is as if they have yet to learn feelings or any sort of emotions at all. Elise invites two friends over to check out the disturbing children and decides to make the five of them a snack. Only thing in in the house is meat: ground meat and lots of it.

What happens next…well, it just needs to be seen to be believed. “Baby-Sitting” just might be the best short film I have ever seen and this is coming from someone who has seen hundreds of short films. Loved the opening Grindhouse style credits, the score is playful yet very sinister and creepy, and the children were deliciously evil without being over-the-top. The use of practical gore effects had me with my mouth agasp for the last half of the film. As if that wasn’t great enough, the use of dark humor had me smiling throughout (there is a scene involving a boy scout that is especially deliciously deranged). I seriously loved every moment of the film and my only criticism is I wish it were longer. I am extremely impressed and cannot wait to see what director/writer Lucas Masson has in store for slasher fans. He has one sick and twisted mind and hopefully that never changes. After “High Tension,” “Inside,” “Martyrs,” and now this, can we all agree that French know where it is at when it comes to horror today?

Tim’s Slasher Tweet Reviews: “Freddy Vs. Jason” (2003)

After the dismal box office but creative success of “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare,” it took New Line Cinema nearly a decade to create the ultimate Nightmare. One in which Freddy would finally meet his match in the form of Jason: “Freddy Vs. Jason” in fact. The film was a huge hit at the box office grossing $83 million and becoming the number one movie in America for two weeks in a row. How does it stand a decade later and which side are you on? Tim Schilling answers both in a brand new tweet by tweet review.

Thoughts before the film:
I’ve seen this one tons of times, but after watching the entire ANOES series, I think I can watch this in a different way.

Thoughts while watching:
0:06 Jason comes back to life for no reason at all every single time, I won’t even bother.
0:14 This may have been one of the first slasher movies I’ve seen, I always remember the guy getting squished by the bed.
0:18 Laurie’s boobs are distracting.
0:26 In Freddy’s Dead there wasn’t a single kid in the entire town, now there’s enough to fill an entire high school?
0:29 What if someone was in a coma and they lived on Elm Street… You’re fucked.
0:34 Raaaaaaaaaaveeeeee. I love this scene.
0:37 Get actors that actually look like they’re high school age.
0:40 Glow stick man is a creep.
0:43 I just don’t understand how someone can’t runaway from Jason.
0:47 The backstory to this movie is so weak.
0:52 Freddy’s back bitchez.
0:56 The part where Laurie thinks she’s awake talking to everyone at the table is so funny.
1:06 The fight scenes between Freddy and Jason are too awesome to hate.
1:13 Oh yeah make out with Jason.
1:17 I love the way Freddy is brought into the real world to fight.
1:20 #TeamFreddy.

Final Verdict:
#FreddyVsJason is way too much fun to hate. The whole movie is just a cool idea that, while I didn’t think was perfect, but was still good. I thought it was more a Freddy movie than a Jason one. A sequel should have been made with that killer ending.

Slasher Studios Presents “Tales From Horrorhound Weekend” (Part Two)

As the fire alarm rings inside the lobby of the Marriott just after midnight, Kevin and I take off to the hotel bar and quickly order a couple drinks in fear the fire was going to force us out. About 5 minutes and $14 later, the alarm silences and the massive party continues. False alarm. With hundreds of insanely drunk horror fans taking over the hotel, it was a miracle that this was the only prank alarm pull. The parties at Horrorhound Weekend were to die for. Lots of people, lots of alcohol and lots of fans talking slash.

Slasher Studios quickly found a warm home with a few fellow Wisconsin filmmakers as well as a few horror fans from around the country. Having walked a few blocks from our hotel to the convention party, and in no shape to walk back, we were given a ride by two new friends of Slasher Studios: Kyle and Alyssa from Buffalo, NY. Horror and Sci-Fi fans to the max, they made the long car ride to spend the weekend meeting some of their favorite movie stars. They were great to talk to get to know and hope to see them at future conventions as well. So, not long before sunrise, we pilled in their rental and headed back to the warm and sticky Radisson down the road. We found some food in the bottom of the cooler, popped in a movie and called it a night.

As we awoke the next morning…err afternoon, the sun was shining and it was a beautiful day for more movies and anything and everything horror related. Before heading to the convention, we stopped for lunch at Jack In The Box. It’s been a while since I had seen one, so I made the stop and ordered and hand full of tacos. Back at Horrorhound, we checked out some more booths and met a few new people as well. But all day our minds were on one thing: the awards ceremony. Later on at 7:30, the awards presentations began with the great Elvira and Peaches Christ as the two hosts of the event. With Teddy as just one of 13 short films selected, we were crossing our fingers, but new that there were many great films. The winner was to receive a paid trip to LA and have a red carpet screening of their film. Very, very cool.

Although Teddy didn’t come away with the big win that we had hoped for (Best Short went to the very deserving sci-fi flick “Other”), the incredible support of complete strangers made the trip worth every penny. People stopped us in the hallways and wrote to us online saying that they saw the film and were now big fans of Teddy and Slasher Studios. I’ll mark that up as a win anyday.

Later on that night, after watching Chopping Mall in the hotel (on my computer because the TV in the room was so old it didn’t have and hookups for the DVD cord), we headed back down the the Marriott and was astounded my the massive amounts of people EVERYWHERE! The place was packed, the drinks were flowing and everyone was having a great time.

Tim’s Slasher Tweet Reviews: “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare” (1994)

After the somewhat lackluster “Freddy’s Dead”, Freddy seemed to be dead and buried for at least a few years. It, however, was in 1994 that Wes Craven came up with the radical idea of bringing Freddy back for another nightmare…a “New Nightmare”. Gone was funny Freddy and the fresh looking 80′s MTV teenagers and in was a concept so unique and groundbreaking that it just couldn’t work? Or could it…. Tim Schilling finds out with a brand new tweet by tweet review of “Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.”

Thoughts before the film:
Really, really excited to see this one. I saw parts of it a long time ago and really liked it.

Thoughts while watching:
0:03 Yay for Nancy/Heather!
0:10 This movie is pretty crazy already.
0:20 Wes Craven, not doing horror movies? Hah!
0:27 Dylan is so creepy, but adorable at the same time. Just like in Pet Sematary.
0:35 Why would the police say it’s an accident when there’s claw marks all the way down his chest!?
0:39 They got basically everyone but Johnny Depp back.Just cause Tim Burton didn’t make this doesn’t mean you can’t be in it.
0:49 What if Robert actually is Freddy and just screwing with everyone!?
0:56 I can’t remember her name but I love the lady who was in the hospital with them, she was the teacher in the first one.
1:02 Just noticing the huge similarities between this and Scream.
1:05 Basically this movie is the movie Wes has been writing in the movie. Wat.
1:18 All of these nurses are bitches.
1:23 That highway scene was one of the most epic scenes in a horror movie I have ever watched.
1:27 Oh my god, when he turns around in the cop uniform and plays the character again.
1:39 Yes. All of the references to the original.
1:43 Wes you trolled all of us!

Final Verdict:
#NewNightmare was probably one of the most epic horror movies I’ve ever seen. Awesome story that actually made sense with all the other movies in the series. Super smart, great performances from basically everyone, and perfect music that makes it seem even more epic.
