Tim’s Horror Tweet Reviews: “Return of the Living Dead III” (1993)

Our resident twitter reviewer Tim Schilling continues to get his zombie groove on with a brand new review of “Return of the Living Dead 3.” While the film was better received than the second installment, it never found an audience at the box office and went down as one of 1993’s lowest grossing films. Does this Romeo & Juliet zombie tale hold up 20 years later?

Thoughts before the film:
Part I and II are two of my favorite movies of all time. I know that 3 is different but I’ve heard good things!

Thoughts while watching:
0:06 I don’t think licking a card like that would make a door open…
0:10 The zombies in this series always make the funniest noises.
0:15 Come on guys it’s the third movie you should know by now if you get bit by a zombie youre gonna turn into one!
0:20 Daddy issues.
0:30 I saw you boom operator! Gotta be more sneaky than that.
0:31 For a second I forgot this was a zombie movie.
0:39 This is so uneventful.
0:48 What the heck is this hobo guy doing?
1:01 This is excruciatingly boring.
1:03 Julie reminds me of that girl zombie they caught in the first one.
1:08 This bitch is messed up!
1:11 I wonder how long it took to put all that make up and stuff on. It’s really cool and done well.
1:17 Holy edited.
1:20 I love practical and corny special effects.
1:29 We can all blame this one asshole for letting the zombies out and killing all these people.

Final Verdict:
#ReturnOfTheLivingDead3, until the last half hour, was pretty boring. I think the idea of the movie is good, but the story didn’t live up to that idea. Zombie films and romance don’t really mix

Pray You Don’t Live Here: “Psycho Street” (2011) Review

Anthology horror fans has always been my favorite horror subgenre. The creators of each short story are given free reign to do anything as wild and crazy as they would like…as long as the running time for each story doesn’t exceed 20 minutes or so. In recent years we have seen some incredible anthology horror flicks (“Trick ‘R Treat” has instantly become a new Halloween classic for me) and some incredibly bad anthology flicks (I’m telling you “The Telling” is quite terrible…don’t be suckered in by the Girls Next Door). With all that in mind, I sat down and watched the latest entitled “Psycho Street.” Are the stories were digging into or does this film deserved to be buried alive?

The film starts with our wraparound segment entitled “Come on Down” in which a feisty and cheerfully insane homemaker named Leyla Barker (a deliciously demented Tiffany Shepis) is keeping something in her basement..something altogether strange and altogether evil. When a young man goes missing (hmm…I wonder where he could be), his wife goes to Leyla for help. Leyla shares with her the terrifying stories of just what strange things have taken over the small town of Kronanburg.

In our first story, the 2010 Philly Terror Fest Award Winner, “Hypochondriac” we meet a doctor who has escaped from the hectic big city life to start a practice in beautiful Kronanburg. Little does he know, the inhabitants of this small town are more bizarre and psychotically weird than anything he has ever seen in the big city. A horny nurse, a old woman who thinks everything and anything is going wrong with her body, and a built young man with an action figure stuck where no action figure has gone before are the highlights of this piece. Very goofy and cheerfully over-the-top but Raine Brown as Nurse Amber Loverjoy had me rolling with fits of uncontrolled laughter. Brown is terrific in this small role and she is such a dynamic screen presence it would be nice to see an entire movie centered solely around her.

In our next story, the very strange “Cronenberg-eque” “Anti-Bodies” centers around a young woman named Aimee who has been tied to a bed and sold off to young men for sex by her deranged mother. What the men do not know is that Aimee is part of a strange species that, well let’s just say it doesn’t take long for them to reproduce. The effects in this short story are gruesome and the rape of poor Aimee is done in a matter-of-fact style that doesn’t try to gloss over the fact that she is having horrible and terrible things done to her. This story gets a little repetitive in nature and the rape scenes and birthing scenes left me more than a little sick. Of the four segments, this is the one done most for shock value and on that level it works. I don’t want to give too much away here but let’s just say that it is something you have never seen before. Once again, I must commend the Fx work in this story, it is truly exceptional.

In the final story, the 70’s style occult thriller “Lewis” we meet Amanda Reece, a thirty-something mother, who arrives to town after many years with her daughter Aubrey to try to unravel mysteries surrounding her youth and the death of Amanda’s mother. Enter Father Lennox and Sister Louise who may be there to help Amanda but also many know far more than they are letting on regarding Amanda’s death. This story, like “Anti-Bodies”, depends a crucial surprises in its final minutes that will likely shock anyone watching it. I loved the hazy, dreamlike feel of this story and this is the most overtly serious of the three stories as it doesn’t play up the camp value like “Hypochrondriac” and “Come on Down”. The effects are stellar and the performances, especially Susan Adriensen as Sister Louise, are some of the best I’ve seen in independent film recently.

Overall, I highly recommend “Psycho Street”, it is one of the more entertaining anthology horror flicks I’ve seen lately with some wonderful performances and a few ghoulishly delightful twists.

“The Orphan Killer” Proves to Be a Delightfully Gory Treat

If you are into blood and gore then The Orphan Killer is the movie for you. From the mind of Matt Farnsworth, we are given a brutal, relentless and unforgiving killer. With blood on the walls, the bodies and just about everywhere imaginable, The Orphan Killer delivers kills that are not only imaginable, but down right insane.

A little girl and her brother sadly become orphans as their loving parents are murdered in cold blood as a home burglary turns deadly. The sister and her protective brother are sent off to an orphanage together, but end up leading completely different lives as they take separate paths out of the orphanage. The sister grows up to be a beautiful blonde and works as a dance teacher at a private religious school. Her brother, well, let’s just say he didn’t exactly make his sister proud.

Whether you’re into the story or not, you will love to be witness to the unbelievable deaths and bucket loads of blood. This serial killer sports a very creepy mask and uses a variety of weapons to end the lives of his victims. The blood in this film is picture perfect. The color and consistency is so realistic that it will leave you thinking twice about what you just saw.

The cinematography found here is amazing. From the birds eye views of the skyline to the slow dolly shots in the school, each frame of the film is crisp and clean and really raises the production value. The editing from time to time is very unique and stylish and fits well into the movie. So, if you are in the mood for a sick and disgusting blood filled film, then look no further than The Orphan Killer.

31 Days of Horror: Day 31: “Night of the Demons” (1988)

One of my favorite slasher/undead movies of late 80’s, Night of the Demons is a rousing, gory, razor-in-the-apple type of horror pick. The actors are terrible, the pacing sucks, and the cinematography is mediocre at best. Hell, sometimes it is hard to even see what is happening on screen. What makes this film work? The rousing energy from the cast and crew and some of the best gore effects to come out of the 80′s. You want to see eyeballs gouged out? A tongue ripped out? A tube of lip stick stuck through a nipple? It’s all here and in a spectacularly gory fashion. “Night of the Demons” was one of the few genuine horror hits of the late 80′s and rightfully so. This movie is a blast from beginning to end and I appreciate the amount of energy that went into this production. This movie has its share of problems but everyone looks like they had their hearts in the right place—right on the bloody screen where we can see them.

‎31 Days of Horror: Day 30: “Eyes Without a Face” (1960)

The hands down scariest movie I’ve seen all year. It might be 50+ years old but it is terrifying as hell. The Criterion Collection DVD is beautiful and the film is creepy enough to get under your skin without you really knowing it. I have my French friend Lucas Masson (the director of BABY-SITTING) to thank for the recommendation. It’s his all time favorite movie and I can see why. It’s a brilliantly beautiful and macabre piece of art. The less you know about this movie going in, the better. Trust me though, it is a one-of-a-kind horror movie that truly must be seen.

Tim’s Horror Tweet Reviews: “Day of the Dead” (1985)

Our final zombie review for Halloween, our resident twitter reviewer Tim Schilling is here with review of the final installment of Romero’s ultimate zombie trilogy (“Night of the Living Dead,” “Dawn of the Dead,” and “Day of the Dead”) and is ready to take on the “Day of the Dead.” Hampered by a limited budget, this one was thought to be a disappointment when released 27 years ago. Has time been kind to this zombie flick?

Thoughts before the film:
I’m raping your newsfeed today and I don’t even care. Last one of the original trilogy. #DayOfTheDead

Thoughts while watching:
0:01 I pooped my pants the first time I saw this movie. The opening scene was freaky!
0:05 This film has the best makeup out of any of the movies in the entire series I think.
0:15 And how the zombies get smarter over time. Even though Survival of the Dead fucks all of that up.
0:17 The zombie they catch looks eerily similar to the zombie they catch in Return of the Living dead… Coincidence?
0:26 They’re doing all this research for nothing. They haven’t had contact in months…
0:33 Just feed Frankenstein already. He’s obviously hungry.
0:42 These guys really want to go to an island I think.
0:46 This Jamaican dude is awesome.
0:49 No zombie that wasn’t very nice! Now you’re in timeout.
0:54 Bub is my favorite zombie, he’s a badass.
1:04 All of these people are nuts.
1:22 This dude is always trying to drink, even when he’s about to get eaten.
1:25 The last 10 minutes of this movie is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. So crazy.
1:25 So. Many. Zombies.
1:32 An old nuke silo is such an awesome setting for a movie.

Final Verdict:
#DayOfTheDead is my favorite in the series. I think it’s the scariest one, and has the best characters out of any of the other movies. An awesome setting, and just overall scary atmosphere makes it my favorite.

Tim’s Horror Tweet Reviews: “Dawn of the Dead” (1978)

Ready for some more zombie action? Our resident twitter reviewer Tim Schilling is back with review of the second installment of Romero’s ultimate zombie trilogy (“Night of the Living Dead,” “Dawn of the Dead,” and “Day of the Dead”) and is ready to take on the “Dawn of the Dead.” Does the series still have bite?

Thoughts before the film:
Let’s hope the power doesn’t go out so I can finish the movie! #DawnOfTheDead

Thoughts while watching:
0:02 I love how chaotic everyone/the world is at the beginning of this movie.
0:10 I don’t get why they made the zombies look blue in this, but it totally works.
0:15 Those moans or whatever you wanna call those noises the zombies make is so creepy. It’s like eerie.
0:19 I always like to think they pass the rednecks from NOTLD.
0:24 Never thought of it this way buy 28 Weeks Later totally referenced this when they got chopped by the helicopter.
0:34 When they turn the music on and kill all the zombies in the mall is such a great scene.
0:49 I wanna know what that monk zombie dude is doing at the mall. I highly doubt he shops there.
0:53 She’s pregnant but still smokes. What a hoe.
0:56 Uh oh I saw JC Penney’s logo! They gonna get sued.
1:01 Using trucks to block the doors is such a good idea. This is why I will survive the zombie apocalypse and you won’t.
1:11 I don’t understand the music choices for this movie sometimes but they totally work.
1:15 Everyone is like slow zombies suck, they’re too weak. But if one basically touches you they rip your skin. Think about it.
1:24 It would just be awesome to get stuck in a mall during the zombie apocalypse. So much free stuff.
1:26 When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.
1:35 I love how they show how much time has gone by. Her pregnancy, the room they stay at, their attitude about everything.
1:38 That and the fact that there isn’t even a broadcast on tv anymore. It’s creepy.
1:42 I love Tom Savini. I would die to meet him one day.
1:48 Every time I watch this movie I see more and more references The Walking Dead does to it.
1:48 Latest one: it’s ours, we took it. The mall and the prison. Ta da.
1:55 I don’t get why that guy had to take his blood pressure when he was getting chased by zombies…?
2:01 It’s kind of an asshole thing to just let the girl go on her own. While she’s preggo.
2:04 And then he gets superhero music when he escapes.

Final Verdict:
Well obviously I love #DawnOfTheDead. Take everything I said about NOTLD and multiply it by like a billion. It’s a huge improvement on a already great movie. Dawn sets up such a good story for the series that it could be taken anywhere and still work.
