Psycho Wife, Unhappy Life: Home Sweet Hell (2015) Review

11150551_10206403106747125_5160031232651738791_n

On Saturday I watched Home Sweet Hell (2015) for the first time. This was the latest DVD screener I received from my job to review. This movie came out direct to DVD and Blu-ray where I live. After having seen the trailer of Home Sweet Hell, my interest had definitely awoken. I heard mainly mixed things from others, but that didn’t hold me back to go watch it myself. Well I’ve watched Home Sweet Hell and I thought it was an entertaining dark comedy with brilliant tongue-in-cheek humor.

Katherine Heigl absolutely nailed her performance as obsessive, OCD and controlfreak Mona Champagne. Talk about a comeback, this role was clearly written for her and she did a brilliant job. The other actors did a fairly decent job themselves, Patrick Wilson and Jordana Brewster were at times overacting. The story isn’t really original in my opinion. Also, there was a lot more that could’ve been done with the concept than what we ended up seeing in the film. This movie makes it difficult for viewers to decide in which genre it belongs: comedy, horror or thriller? I wasn’t bored for a second while watching Home Sweet Hell and before you know the movie is over. There is also a surprising amount of blood and gore in Home Sweet Hell, which I loved.

The directing by Anthony Burns (Skateland) is solid. The movie is filled with twists and turns and the ending is nowhere near predictable. Home Sweet Hell is worth watching for Katherine Heigl’s excellent performance and the hilarious dark humor alone. Lots of memorable and clever one-liners in this movie. It has a lot of problems, obviously, but its a solid flick to watch on a Saturday night. I’d say its worth a rental, or if you’re a fan of one of the main actors: purchase the DVD/Blu-ray! Trust me, you could do a lot worse…

Horror Sequel Review: “Fright Night 2: New Blood” (2013)

22427_10206347781124019_535005109403288785_n

On Monday I watched Fright Night 2: New Blood (2013) for the first time. This was the latest DVD screener I received from my job to review. This movie has gone straight-to-DVD pretty much everywhere. My expectations were pretty low to begin with. I have seen Fright Night 2: New Blood and let me begin by telling you that this movie is another remake of the 1985 original, but unfairly disguised as a direct sequel.

As for the movie, Fright Night 2: New Blood is a very decent entry in the horror genre. The story is unoriginal and the ending is predictable. If you’ve seen any Fright Night movie before, you can already guess the ending from miles away. Admitted, the story has one interesting aspect to it that hasn’t been done before and that would be the Elizabeth Báthory legend, I wish they did a little bit more with that aspect. The acting performances are weak, some of the characters were really annoying. I could only care for the main actor Will Payne who played Charley Brewster as he was pretty likeable. The make-up effects are surprisingly solid and there is a fair amount of blood and gore in this movie. The directing wasn’t bad either, especially for a direct-to-video title. There is also a fair share of humor in this, but some of the jokes feel kind of pushed. Fright Night 2: New Blood is overall extremely pointless and unnecessary as it doesn’t add up much to what we’ve seen in the Fright Night remake of 2011, which I actually much prefer over this…

If you’re a fan of the Fright Night movies you might enjoy this for what it is, but for newcomers: stay FAR away! And don’t let the misleading title fool you, this movie is nothing but a less than underwhelming repeat of what has been done MUCH better in the past. As of right now, the Fright Night franchise is dead in the water if you ask me. The hatchet should’ve been buried after the 2011 remake, as this latest outing is nothing more than a double obvious cash grab.

A Second Look: “It Follows” (2015) Review

19425_10206288189034254_5236020727094352344_n

This past Sunday I watched It Follows (2014) in theaters during an early screening. My first movie theater visit of the year! I had been living up to the release of this movie for quite a long time, especially after hearing so many rave reviews about it. Well I have watched It Follows and in my opinion it is one of the best horror movies in years.

It is unique and exceptional in its way of creating suspense rather than creating a body count. The acting performances are outstanding and Maika Monroe pulls off an impressive and iconic performance that instantly puts her on the map. An incredible up-and-coming actress and I’m even more anticipated to see The Guest, knowing she’s in it as well. David Robert Mitchell does an excellent job with the directing of It Follows. His way of filming look and feel like something right out of the 70’s/80’s. Especially the large amount of tracking shots have an eerie and suspenseful effect. In the writing department this movie doesn’t fail either, characters are well written and developed and are above all likeable. Besides the thrills and suspense there is plenty of room for the more humor and dramatic moments.

The haunting and memorable synthesized score by Disasterpeace in It Follows is one of the very best aspects of this movie. It really helps with building up the suspense. It Follows offers style and substance, that is a rare occurring to find in a horror movie. From the unnervingly tense opening sequence to the truly original final act, It Follows makes for a viewing experience you won’t forget anytime soon. The plot has some holes and some of those plotholes are left to the viewers imagination.

Aside of that, It Follows is a beautiful love letter to old school horror movies of the 70’s and 80’s. This movie is destined to become a cult classic, if it isn’t already. My favorite movie of the year and its a short matter of time before a second viewing will occur. For the best video and audio quality, I highly suggest you watch this masterpiece on the big screen if possible.

Spooky Skype: “Unfriended” (2015) Review

unfriended-2

The film starts out with video footage of teenager Laura Barnes (Heather Sossaman) committing suicide. Following this, it shows a YouTube video of Laura hard core drunk at a party and an unknown person is filming it. Cut to a Skype session between Blair (Shelley Hennig) and her boyfriend Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm). Some flirtation occurs before their friends Jess (Renee Olstead), Adam (Will Peltz), Ken (Jacob Wysocki), and Val (Courtney Halverson) pop into the chat. It starts out innocently, the friends goof around with each other and crack jokes. The fun is suddenly cut when an unknown person logs into the chat with them, as well as sending messages. The friends discover that Laura is the unknown chatter. As the session progresses, the friends find themselves trapped in a deadly game where their secrets are revealed, friendships are tested, and lives are in danger.

When the trailer for the film was released, it definitely caught my attention. It looked like a fun teen horror film. As time progressed, I learned the film was rated R, which heightened my excitement level. But then, reviews rolled in and they were extremely positive. Not that I listen to critic reviews in the first place, but it was still pleasantly surprising to see a horror movie receive good reviews that wasn’t supernatural or indie. However, upon seeing the film, I found myself massively disappointed and furious. The concept I admit was very engaging, bringing terror into the cyber world is relatively new for the horror/found footage genre. Despite this, it essentially did NOTHING with the story, or at least nothing worthwhile. To start of with, the terror is very weak. Not once did I feel remotely close to scared or creeped out. Any jump scares there were, were not effective at all, with what little jump scares they had. The whole time during the terror it is nothing but the friends crying, shouting, or yelling at each other or their unknown assailant. None of the situations the characters were in besides the kills weren’t scary.

This leads to the characters themselves. Not ONE of these characters were likable. You literally wanted ALL of them die. They were annoying, stupid, and horrible people. During the “terror” scenes, the reactions of the characters were unbearable that you just wanted someone to die so they’d shut up. Along with this, is the horrible acting by the characters. You can tell the actors were trying way to hard to be scared and vulnerable. If the characters or at least some of them had been remotely likable, it might have been more tolerable and more chilling. The film also features many moments where it tried to be funny, but it absolutely ruined the flow of the film, the characters’ stupidity added to this. However, I will give it credit to say that there were moments during the game of “Never Have I Ever” that were engaging, but failed to completely capture because they could have amped it up. Another plus I will give it are the great kills. We only get just some glimpses of them, but it’s effecting enough. On another note, I fail to see how this movie garnered an R rating, the kills, while bloody, could easily have been PG-13, and the use of the f-bomb I barely even noticed.

Overall, Unfriended is one movie to completely avoid. But if you must see it for some reason, wait until Redbox. The film is horribly written in every respect, and terribly acted. While it had great kills, it’s not enough to make up for this mess of a film. Check out the movie The Den for a similar story, but MUCH better as a horror film.

Mini review:

Unfriended is the perfect horror film when it comes to accurately depicting the apathy of the social media obsessed youth culture. While I was not a fan of the last 5 seconds, I was tense during this entire film. I loved seeing these characters turn on each other. This was the first horror film that I’ve seen to really dig into the subject of bullying (something that 2013’s Carrie remake merely hinted at) and the effects of the social media crowd’s peer pressure survival instincts. I found the specifics of the internet (such as typing and then deleting to rephrase your thoughts better) and social media were done perfectly. This will NOT be a film for everyone and I can totally see someone hating it. Nonetheless, it worked well for me and I can’t wait to see it again.

Harry Devil: “Horns” (2014) Review

11133666_10206180397339529_5507214753818875970_n

So on Saturday I’ve watched Horns (2014) for the first time. This was my latest Blu-ray Disc screener I received from my job to review. This movie was released in theaters where I live this past November. I was interested in seeing it mainly because I like the cast and the poster looked like fun, but I ended up missing it on the big screen. Well I have watched Horns and I gotta say it genuinely took me by surprise. Its especially good that I went in watching this as fresh as possible, without even having watched a trailer or having read the synopsis.

Horns is a very unique and original fantasy thriller. The acting performances are brilliant, with an exceptional lead performance by Daniel Radcliffe as he pulls off his best performance to date. I also have to give props to the young and talented actors Juno Temple and Max Minghella, who each embodied their respective character flawlessly. This movie is entertaining, funny and scary all at the same time. Horns is quite like nothing I have ever seen before. The screenplay and dialogue feel refreshing and inventive. Visually the movie appeals a lot and the directing by Alexandre Aja (Mirrors, Piranha 3D) is really solid. The make-up effects throughout the movie also look amazing. I did feel that some scenes went on for too long.

Horns is also too much of a genre cocktail and can’t quite decide what it wants to be: horror, comedy, fantasy, drama or thriller? I also thought the movie didn’t exactly kicked off on a high note, but it definitely got better with each scene. The soundtrack is very fun to listen to. Horns has some great twists up its sleeve and the final act is an absolute blast. The movie offers plenty of style and substance and is a movie that is able to stand on its own. I highly recommend you to watch this fun flick for the cast and original concept alone. You can’t go wrong watching Horns, especially if you have a love for good horror and dark humor.
